Introduction

The Marinemaster is the Holy Grail of Seiko diving watches. It has long been associated with the ultimate tool watch, i.e. a professional diving watch with a one-piece helium-proof case and unmatched sturdiness.

Recently turned into SLA, it was among the first models to join the renovated Prospex X logo while abandoning the Marinemaster moniker. Despite its glorious name, the original model still appears in the brand’s catalogue as SLA021J1 and SLA023J1.

From 1968 to 1965: a new source of inspiration

The original Marinemaster 300 drew inspiration from the 1968 Seiko diving watch; in contrast, the freshly released Seiko Marinemaster 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation SJE097J1, which pays tribute to Seiko’s 100th anniversary, is the legendary 62MAS, Japan’s first diving watch and Seiko’s first-ever diving watch.

Seiko debuts a new Marinemaster and a family of products combining vintage and modern traits, sporting unexpected features, without doubling down on Prospex’s technical pedigree.

A new case and a new bracelet stand out.

The new model measures 39.5 mm in diameter and 12.3 mm in thickness. The case adopts the unmistakable 62MAS lugs and has a lug-to-lug distance exceeding the 47 mm threshold (47.2 mm). It means it is a timepiece conceived with comfort in mind, capable of sliding under the cuff, paired with a better-engineered bracelet. The latter proves what we experienced with the Speedtimer Mechanical Chronograph, i.e., a thoroughly thought-out design.

The watch has an 80s feel and is brilliant: it has a five-link bracelet with a midsection that collects three elements into one piece. Hence, it is as classic-feeling and mirror-polished as it is sturdy during your next diving session.

The bracelet’s elliptical shape promotes comfort; the polished surface follows the equally polished edge profile, whose design widens in the case-to-bracelet area.

Straight, curved, brushed, and polished lines pair with the eye-catching, knurled rotating bezel’s outer ring. While the new Marinemaster cannot match a Zaratsu polishing technique, the excellent outcome confirms Seiko’s steel’s top-notch perceived quality.

The dial

Featuring a white horizontal pattern, the watch comes, unlike the 62MAS, with rectangular-shaped baton indexes.

Can you spot a date window? It is hard to tell at first sight. Kudos to the designer for making it as discreet as possible. Adopting the dial’s colour, it prides itself on being one of the least intrusive date windows ever.

A see-through case back over calibre 6L37

Here is the hottest topic as we sit down and talk about a world first: please welcome the first-ever professional Seiko Prospex diver’s watch without a solid case back. Isn’t it? That is, on paper, something outrageous to any honest Seiko fan. Times have changed, and so has Seiko, too.

While we do not judge enthusiasts for praising this choice, we understand a large audience of prospective customers is looking for a less professional-looking Seiko diving watch with a more classic taste. Likely, such an audience was eagerly awaiting something different.

Flip the case over, and you will fully view calibre 6L37. The 6L37 movement aims to slim down the case since its thickness stops at 3.7 mm. Seiko opted for the 6L range, whose 6L37 variant houses professional divers. It is sturdy as usual, equipped with the in-house Diashock shockproof system, and opens up to further developments.

Final thoughts

Looking and feeling like a time-only sports watch with authentic professional diving watch specs (it is a 200 m rated diving watch), the Seiko Marinemaster 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation SJE097J1 opens a new platform into the Prospex product family. It places comfort and sporty-chic elegance first, adding a vintage touch, as exemplified by the curved sapphire glass.

The “less is more” concept is all around, and a transparent case back proves it is a Prospex, but not exclusively a Prospex.

We would have gone for a Prospex logo and “Limited Edition” wording on the winding mass, leaving the 6L37 on display, thus cleaning up the style in that area.

The Marinemaster offers the right proportions, excellent finishes, and extreme attention to detail. The Seiko Marinemaster 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation SJE097J1 is limited to one thousand pieces and has a list price of 3,400 Euros.
