Last year, Longines unveiled a modern re-edition of the Majetek, one paying tribute to the brand’s long-established aviation foothold and as legendary as the better-known Lindbergh and Weems watches. That watch is no longer a one-piece collection since the Longines Pilot Majetek Pioneer Edition debuts today.
The new Pioneer Edition
We extensively talked about the reissue. To learn more about Majetek, click here to read our in-depth article. 2024 welcomes a new Pioneer Edition product option, i.e. the “Pioneer” take on the stainless steel Majetek.
As known, Pioneer means titanium replaces steel, and the formula now applies extensively to the brand’s Heritage models, too: the new model thus joins the Spirit Pioneer Edition and the BigEye in titanium with a blue petroleum dial.
That said, the Majetek unexpectedly blends a 1935-inspired design with materials nobody could ask for when the timepiece was supplied to the Czech Air Force.
Pioneer Edition, i.e. grade 5 titanium
The grade 5 titanium elevates the cushion case design, making it even more comfortable than its steel sibling and virtually slimming it down, considering its 43.00 mm large and 13.30 mm thick silhouette. It is not an outsized watch per se, but the cushion case design is sometimes hard to manage on smaller wrists.
Titanium fosters lightness, ensuring an average 40% weight savings compared to steel. Designers gave the watch a “ghost” look, pairing a matte black dial with greyish touches.
The watch is a two-tone timepiece with a vaguely high-tech feel. It has a dark grey case, black-grained dial with “titanium” grey hands, and Arabic numerals filled with Super-LumiNova® blue.
Early thoughts
Choosing grade 5 titanium is a game-changer geared towards enthusiasts who appreciate the Majetek but won’t make that final step because of its size and weight.
Also, I must admit that the new design does not affect the watch’s identity. It preserves its vintage touch and adds to the standard model by offering a monochrome take, which I like. Also, it comes as a 1935-piece limited edition model. However, to complete our evaluation, let’s wait for Longines to disclose the listed price.
