Has Grand Seiko created the ultimate luxury dive watch? That\u2019s a common view since the brand unveiled the SLGB023 and SLGB025<\/strong> last April. In our view, these two sporting references aim well beyond their product category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new watches\u2019 design mimics the Evolution 9 case, and its Spring Drive U.F.A.<\/a><\/strong> calibre delivers otherworldly engineering. Since its 2025 debut, the ultra-fine-accuracy movement has steadily extended to other models. Introduced last April, the Ushio 300 Diver is its dive-watch counterpart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Grand Seiko introduced the Evolution 9<\/a><\/strong> collection, I initially struggled to understand its purpose: evolution or replacement<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably both. The Grammar of Design\u2014Grand Seiko\u2019s design bible\u2014sets strict aesthetic principles and boundaries, yet this collection has shown unexpected creativity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Evolution 9<\/strong> dive watches have since abandoned the brand\u2019s original mechanical and Spring Drive diver\u2019s watch design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A smooth symmetrical case, a recessed 3 o\u2019clock crown, and extensive use of High<\/strong>\u2013Intensity Titanium<\/strong> have given Grand Seiko\u2019s divers a sportier, more distinctly \u201cEuropean\u201d character than their predecessors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Voice of Customer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I like to imagine the development team asking: \u201cWhat does an enthusiast look for in a dive watch, and what sets ours apart?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balanced proportions may draw an enthusiast in, but outstanding engineering<\/strong> and build quality must deliver on that promise. Grand Seiko\u2019s obsessive attention to detail is key.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver SLGB023 \u201cUshio Blue\u201d<\/em> and SLGB025 \u201cUshio Green\u201d<\/em> embody these principles in a surprisingly compact<\/strong> package, despite their big capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their symmetrical case measures 40.8 mm across and 12.9 mm thick\u2014compact for a 300m<\/strong>\u2013rated<\/strong> professional dive watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither is engineered for saturation diving, which would require a different build; excellent finishing<\/strong> and a close-to-50mm lug-to-lug measurement complete a well-built, highly wearable design.<\/p>\n\n\n

The designers have kept several features from earlier Evolution 9 divers: deep grooves<\/strong> for gripping the crown and bezel\u2014the latter offering 120 beautifully precise, smooth clicks\u2014and superb Zaratsu finishing on the High-Intensity Titanium case and bracelet. This is arguably the finest polishing one could ask for on this metal in this category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new clasp joins the diver\u2019s watch collection.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Built for active use, the Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver is the first dive watch to receive a diver-oriented version of the original U.F.A. clasp<\/strong>. It features a dual-push-button release and a micro-adjustment system offering 6 mm of extension for everyday wear.<\/p>\n\n\n

It also adds extra protection: a snap-lock safety<\/strong> catch<\/strong>, operated via the GS logo, helps prevent accidental opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grand Seiko took its time to listen to the community\u2019s feedback<\/strong> before designing a clasp that ticks all the boxes: sturdy, easy to use, and equipped with a proper micro-adjustment mechanism.<\/p>\n\n\n

The U.F.A. movement alone is worth the asking price<\/strong>, but you need a solid understanding of watchmaking and Spring Drive technology. Only then can one grasp what it takes to achieve an accuracy of \u00b120 seconds a year<\/strong>\u2014meaning perfect timekeeping in everyday use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perfection is a target you look for but never achieve. Still, Grand Seiko comes remarkably close<\/strong> here. With the Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver, the brand has set an exceptionally high bar<\/strong> for premium watches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the designers have given the dials similar attention. Both colours feature the Ushio pattern<\/strong>\u2014Japanese for \u201ctide\u201d<\/em>\u2014and broad indexes filled with LumiBrite for a strong glow in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n

Although the collection comes exclusively in titanium\u2014a lightweight, hypoallergenic metal ideally suited to a sports watch\u2014I hope Grand Seiko considers an Ushio in Ever<\/strong>\u2013Brilliant Steel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n
