Breguet has taken an unexpected turn with its Marine collection, reworking the time-only and chronograph models in the design idiom<\/strong> that has already transformed the brand\u2019s classic watches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than a revolution, this is what I\u2019d call a \u201cmodel-year refresh\u201d<\/em>: new decorative touches<\/strong> that add refinement and update the collection\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The changes span the Marine 5517 and Marine Chronographe 5527<\/strong>, from their entry-level models to their more opulent gold counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Titanium, guilloch\u00e9 and Arabic numerals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Both refreshed lines share several design cues. The dial\u2019s centre debuts the\u00a0\u201cQuai de l\u2019Horloge\u201d<\/em>\u00a0pattern, a hallmark of Breguet\u2019s 250<\/strong>th<\/sup> anniversary<\/strong>, joined by applied gold Arabic numerals that replace the latest Marine generation\u2019s broad, imposing Roman numerals.<\/p>\n\n\n

The guilloch\u00e9 adds decorative depth<\/strong> to a watch that straddles classical elegance and sporting style; rooted in Breguet\u2019s decorative tradition, the process involves a treated gold base finished with a lacquer layer in the chosen shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applied gold numerals sit on the dial\u2019s outer ring, keeping the hours and minutes easy to read<\/strong>. In contrast, the applied gold\u00a0\u201cBreguet\u201d<\/em>\u00a0signature sits within the central section and the date aperture at six o\u2019clock bridges the two.<\/p>\n\n\n

Completing the new Marine\u2019s dial are luminescent<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cpomme\u201d<\/em>\u00a0hour and minute hands, matching luminous triangular markers around the outermost ring, and a central seconds hand tipped with a nautical-style B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One welcome addition is the new rubber strap\u2019s design and, more notably, its textured outer surface<\/strong>, which echoes the dial\u2019s\u00a0\u201cQuai de l\u2019Horloge\u201d<\/em>\u00a0pattern; the caseback retains its current construction, with a ring framing the sapphire window through which the movement and its openworked, ship\u2019s-wheel rotor can be admired, a motif repeated on the strap\u2019s clasp.<\/p>\n\n\n

As we\u2019ll see, Breguet\u2019s design choices across the two families deserve a closer look<\/strong>; taken together, they offer plenty of talking points and, to my mind, hint at the thinking behind some very deliberate product decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breguet Marine 5517<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mechanically, this is the closest to the existing 5517. Breguet\u2019s self-winding calibre 777A<\/strong> remains untouched, but the entry-level Marine 5517 now comes in titanium, on either a strap or a bracelet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measuring 40.0 mm across and 11.5 mm thick, the Marine\u2019s coin-edge case isn\u2019t ultra-thin, but titanium\u2019s substantial weight savings<\/strong> fundamentally change the 5517\u2019s wearing experience.<\/p>\n\n\n

That choice will be especially welcome on the bracelet model<\/strong>, whose all-steel sibling can be prohibitively heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With no quick-release<\/strong> system available, you cannot easily swap between strap and bracelet.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sitting above the titanium model are two precious-metal options<\/strong>: 18-carat white gold with an ice-blue dial, and 18-carat rose gold with a black lacquered dial.<\/p>\n\n\n

For me, the white gold version stands out<\/strong> in the new line-up; the screw-down crown and 100-metre water resistance also offer real versatility for everyday wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breguet Marine Chronographe 5527<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Marine Chronographe follows a similar approach, with one notable departure<\/strong> from the existing 5527.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breguet\u2019s base calibre 582 QA<\/strong> is unchanged, but the dial loses its 12-hour chronograph register\u2014another change that, in my view, works particularly well.<\/p>\n\n\n

The refreshed Marine Chronographe 5527\u2019s perfectly symmetrical bi-compax layout<\/strong> is cleaner and more pleasing than its three-register predecessor\u2019s, while also sitting more comfortably alongside the three-hand range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, too, the choice is titanium<\/strong>, white gold or rose gold<\/strong>. The white gold model takes its cue from its three-hand sibling, though its dial darkens towards the perimeter and its applied Arabic numerals are grey rather than blue.<\/p>\n\n\n

Rose gold, meanwhile, is paired with a blue dial<\/strong>\u2014a well-judged colour pairing with an established following in this category of gold-cased sports watches on bracelets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The self-winding calibre also offers flyback functionality<\/strong>, a feature worth highlighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both gold versions have considerable appeal, but they are undeniably bulky; at 42.3 mm across and 13.9 mm thick, the case makes a spectacular impression, particularly in white gold, though I would regard a strap as essential here<\/strong> to minimise the overall heft.<\/p>\n\n\n

As noted earlier, Breguet also offers the chronograph in titanium<\/strong>, this time with a grey palette: a gradient treatment at the dial\u2019s centre and a matt grey matching strap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the press photographs, it looks rather subdued<\/strong> next to the other variants\u2014and the titanium 5517.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prices and first thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This far-reaching redesign achieves its aim: softening the current Marine generation\u2019s visual heft and giving the collection a new allure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Titanium, which may not be the only long-term option, makes both the 5517 and 5527 immediately more wearable<\/strong> and compelling.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ice blue\u2014one of watchmaking\u2019s current colour trends\u2014adds a fresh dimension<\/strong> to the range, and I feel the white gold versions of both references capture the collection\u2019s character most convincingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taken as a whole, the new Marine models champion classical design and fine craftsmanship, bringing the strengths of Breguet\u2019s more traditional collections into the sports-watch<\/strong> arena; that combination gives them a distinctive position among their peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two movements, however, are technically outdated<\/strong>: neither their beat rates nor their power reserves sets them apart in this competitive field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for prices, entry into the new Breguet Marine range starts at \u20ac23,800<\/strong> for the titanium model on a rubber strap, rising to \u20ac27,000<\/strong> on a bracelet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In either white or rose gold, prices start at \u20ac44,000<\/strong> on a strap and rise to \u20ac72,300<\/strong> on a bracelet. The Marine Chronographe 5527 starts at \u20ac29,800 in titanium on a strap, or \u20ac33,000 on a bracelet. Whether in white or rose gold, the chronograph costs \u20ac53,600 on a strap and \u20ac84,600 on a bracelet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
