There\u2019s a new word to familiarise with in watchmaking, and\u00a0that is \u201cTropic-proof.\u201d When most watch brands turned\u00a0their\u00a0heads to the sports watch category in the late 1960s, Alpina didn\u2019t develop exclusively diving or GMT watches<\/strong>, like the majority of their\u00a0competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Swiss brand\u2019s take on intercontinental flights<\/strong> to the world\u2019s most exotic destinations ultimately resulted in a traditional three-hand watch, laconically named \u201cTropic-Proof,\u201d whose performance was not as ordinary as its classic style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTropic-proof\u201d does not identify any new product specification; still, it was a brilliant marketing strategy to attract frequent flyers and offer them a three-hand watch in steel similar to\u00a0the models flooding the market back then, yet equipped with a more tried-and-tested steel case<\/strong> than anything else in the benchmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fran\u00e7ois Borgel for Alpina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alpina partnered with Fran\u00e7ois Borgel, a case builder whose name resonated in Swiss haute horlogerie, thanks to a case construction known for its extraordinary robustness<\/strong> and superior craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borgel may be new to younger watch aficionados, who are unaware that their cases, identified by the FB logo on the caseback, have been praised for their excellent resistance<\/strong> to dust and humidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here comes the \u201cTropic-Proof\u201d<\/em> moniker to ensure a watch\u2019s superior outdoor capabilities, under certain conditions. Among the watch brands partnering with Borgel is Patek Philippe, with its reference 1463<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0 2025 Tropic-Proof<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The contemporary Alpina Tropic-Proof faithfully pays tribute to the original<\/strong>, reproducing all the traits found on the circa 1965 model, when it is believed the brand began production.<\/p>\n\n\n

Among them is a sapphire crystal with a \u201cglass box\u201d<\/em> design, which mimics the feel of the first-ever Tropic-Proof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measuring 34 mm in diameter<\/strong> and showcasing a decagonal caseback, its thickness stops at 9.25 mm<\/strong> as opposed to the forerunner\u2019s 11.50 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n

What sets old and new apart is the calibre, which honours the original concept, yet with few similarities. The new Tropic-Proof houses a movement internally coded as AL-480 but retains a hand-wind mechanism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

While mimicking the historic model, it differs from the original 2.5 Hertz Alpina in-house 598R<\/strong> movement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powering the 2025 model is a 4 Hertz movement with a 42-hour maximum power reserve<\/strong>, not as prestigious as its vintage counterpart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You won\u2019t see it, as the designers have closed the case to reproduce the original decagonal solid caseback<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Wearing and feeling like an ultra-classic watch<\/strong>, it pairs with an Alcantara strap on a pin buckle to ensure superior comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thumbs up to Alpina for sizing the watch at 34mm<\/strong>, like its 1960s counterpart. While downsizing is a trend, it may look and feel too small by modern standards.<\/p>\n\n\n

A glossy white or black dial features applied indexes with luminous dots, as well as double indexes located at 3, 6, 9, and 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small strip of luminescent material was applied to the dauphin\u2019s hands. Turning the case on its side reveals straight, angled-down lugs<\/strong> for maximum comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who is Alpina Tropic-Proof\u2019s prospective customer? The answer isn\u2019t as tricky as<\/strong> the question suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n

It is instrumental to introduce Alpina watches to newbies and raise brand awareness by reproducing historic models. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the Heritage collection\u2019s\u00a0primary\u00a0goal, and a Tropic-Proof fits in<\/strong> as never done before by any recent Alpina Heritage model.<\/p>\n\n\n

A 34 mm size is a call to vintage enthusiasts<\/strong>, a community gathering young and old watch\u00a0fans, who are allowed to purchase a contemporary reissue with an authentic pedigree at less than \u20ac1,800\u2014\u20ac1,795 to be precise\u2014choosing between two clean dials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My only concern, as mentioned elsewhere, is the slightly oversized logo on an otherwise exquisite dial design.<\/p>\n\n\n

This watch was not engineered for large volumes; it is a promotional item for a legendary watch manufacturer<\/strong>, and I hope it will be available in more sizes and feature a larger in-house mechanical movement soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
