Intro<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once, the Seiko diving watch collection took centre stage among the brand\u2019s novelties:\u00a0Sumo, Turtle, Shogun, and Marinemaster<\/strong>\u00a0were the most popular monikers and often extended their presence beyond the market segment they were purposely engineered for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forget that scenario; it is down the memory line. Prospex watches have\u00a0become so sophisticated they can easily hold a\u00a0multi-purpose role<\/strong>\u00a0around scuba or professional diving. Yet, the product mix has changed to make Seiko a tough-to-compete-against-watch brand in multiple product categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In brief, while Prospex watches rose to new\u00a0heights, so did Seiko\u2019s premium\u00a0King Seiko<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0collection, whose\u00a0success has helped the brand gain growing\u00a0respect in a territory once dominated by their Swiss competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, one piece of the puzzle was missing. When every press media representative thought no further additions\u00a0were underway, Seiko\u00a0unexpectedly raised the bar, first with the handsome\u00a0ultra-thin KS 1969 sub-collection<\/strong>\u00a0and now with its take on the ubiquitous sports watch on an integrated bracelet: the\u00a0King Seiko Vanac<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vintage pedigree, avant-garde vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While everything about King Seiko before the 2025 Vanac\u2019s introduction pays homage to the brand\u2019s pedigree, the Vanac is an ode to the future of the collection (and the brand).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u00a0spot traces<\/strong>\u00a0of the original range produced between 1972 and 1974, but the 2025 Vanac is a different\u00a0story and a white-paper-based project, inside and out.<\/p>\n\n\n

Here is a contemporary collection requiring\u00a0Seiko\u2019s best efforts in design and engineering<\/strong>, and the official launch in 2025 Q1 is no coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Else said: the collection was probably on its\u00a0mark to be revealed by the end of last year, but the brand has postponed its\u00a0launch to avoid any overlap with the first 100 years\u2019 celebration models. Such iteration also proves King Seiko is a class apart, one step above everything that is\u00a0\u201cKing Seiko \u2013 King\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A flawless execution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The outcome is a bold watch. A hexagonal case shape combines multiple surfaces where\u00a0flat polished and brushed parts cross their\u00a0paths to create ultra-sharp edges, like a Katana mixing up with a Shuriken.<\/p>\n\n\n

Every line is quintessentially Japanese and aims to prove a master craftsman\u2019s\u00a0artistry in shaping metal. It\u2019s a love-it-or-hate-it affair, but\u00a0every part fits in flawlessly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seiko avoided the now-popular Genta-inspired design, which is often seen across the\u00a0\u201cmidfield\u201d<\/em>\u00a0watch business. Instead, I might\u00a0recall an\u00a0original Octo design<\/strong>\u00a0approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volumes stand out on the curved case side, as does the grooved oversized winding crown<\/strong>, which serves as a design statement first and foremost.<\/p>\n\n\n

The build features a mid-body with straight, integrated lugs measuring\u00a041.0 mm in diameter and 14.3 mm thick<\/strong>, whose boldness continues with the nicely executed integrated bracelet. To top things off, a domed sapphire glass further extends the overall thickness of the watch.<\/p>\n\n\n

The horizontally patterned dial and its vintage colour palette tone down a powerful silhouette. Topped by a polygonal ring with gold or rhodium-plated traits, it provides a\u00a0perceivable seventies touch<\/strong>, empowered by a V for Vanac at twelve as (too) much as on the central second\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n

Seiko has released its most refined and robust steel bracelet ever. Not only does it extend the polished-to-brushed game, but it also visually slims down the case, ending up with a\u00a0butterfly folding clasp<\/strong>. It also proves that a Vanac is not a watch for small wrists, despite aspiring to sell globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seiko\u2019s new 8L45 caliber<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A new mechanical movement is in\u00a0the house, and that\u2019s the 8L45<\/strong>, whose specs confirm how relevant Vanac is\u00a0to\u00a0Seiko\u2019s strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n

A quick comparison with the tried-and-tested 8L35 suggests it is assembled like its sibling at the\u00a0Shizukuishi Studio in Morioka<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the specs, it houses 35 jewels instead of 26 and guarantees a 72-hour maximum power reserve<\/strong>, on par with\u00a0a 9S65 movement.<\/p>\n\n\n

Boasting a declared accuracy of +10 to -5 seconds per day (thus outperforming an 8L35\u2019s +15 to -10 seconds per day), the 8L45 sets as the\u00a0most precise Seiko movement<\/strong>\u00a0available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We assume it will soon replace any 8L35-powered watch like the 300m Marinemaster; it already houses the fresh new\u00a0Marinemaster 600 meters 60th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary<\/strong>\u00a0diving watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0King Seiko Vanac will launch in July as a\u00a0five-variant collection<\/strong>. Three options with\u00a0a purple, blue, or ivory dial will pair with two limited edition offerings. I foresee the blue one being the collection\u2019s top seller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the limited edition models<\/strong>, the first is an option with a brown \u201cmahogany\u201d<\/em> dial depicting Tokyo\u2019s dawn, and the next is an ice-dial boutique-only edition.<\/p>\n\n\n

Who is a Vanac meant for? It is for design-minded watch fans who pay attention to perceived quality<\/strong> and sturdy build; here are the main assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanac has a strong presence and a list of details and finishes\u00a0above the \u20ac3,400 suggested list price<\/strong>\u00a0geared towards big wrists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll add two comments. First, we expect Seiko to release a smaller and thinner King Seiko Vanac<\/strong> to bring the collection to its full\u00a0potential, but it needs to adopt the\u00a0slimmer 6L movement family.<\/p>\n\n\n

Next is how a Vanac\u00a0might\u00a0evolve to house further mechanical complications: I hope Seiko will soon consider a Vanac chronograph with\u00a0integrated, hidden push buttons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
