During the recently broadcasted media-press Omega Days 2022<\/strong> event, the brand has released a series of terrific new models, proving they are further moving upmarket while covering every product category with range extensions and breakthrough watches. There are plenty of new Omega watches<\/strong> added to virtually any collection this year. As we approach Watches and Wonders<\/strong>, I\u2019m equally eager to discover what Omega<\/strong>\u2018s competitors will release and which timepieces industry experts and consumers will compare the 2022 new Omega watches<\/strong> against.<\/p>\n

The breakthrough Omega Ultra Deep<\/h2>\n

Some call it \u201cOmega Seamaster Ultra Deep\u201d<\/em>; others add \u201cPlanet Ocean\u201d<\/em>; it simply is the 2022 Omega Ultra Deep<\/strong> and offers one-of-a-kind features to set it apart from any other Seamaster<\/strong> or Seamaster Planet Ocean<\/strong><\/a> released so far.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

Ultra Deep<\/strong> is a short and bold name summarizing Omega watches<\/strong>\u2018 next big thing among super professional diving watches, the outcome of the brand\u2019s \u201cskunkworks\u201d that raises the bar in this class of products to such an extent to outperform the Seiko Group<\/strong> and Rolex<\/strong>, in one go.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

The Ultra Deep<\/strong> project also proves how Omega<\/strong> listens to watch aficionados and, case in point, professional divers. While abiding by the rules of the ISO 6425<\/strong> standard is no headline news in the industry any longer, designing a helium-proof case capable of withstanding the pressure at 6000 meters<\/strong> below the sea level is quite a thing and ranks the brand as the pole sitter in the never-ending race for conquering the Ocean depths.<\/p>\n

Technical features (and some physics), in short.<\/h3>\n

The 45,5mm<\/strong> large and 18mm<\/strong> thick case mimics its direct competitor, the Rolex Deepsea<\/strong>, but outperforms the competition in specs and, primarily, engineering. As stated above, the steel (or titanium) case is so hermetic to be fully helium-proof. The standard collection also welcomes O<\/strong>\u2013Megasteel<\/strong>, the first-ever brand\u2019s proprietary steel.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

From a mechanical properties perspective, a 6000-meter water-resistant watch<\/strong> can withstand up to 600 bar<\/strong> of pressure or 60 MN per square meter<\/strong> static load. A standard 316L<\/strong> or 904L<\/strong> test piece\u2019s yield point is 220 MPa<\/strong> on average in the benchmark. According to Omega<\/strong> official sources, the O<\/strong>\u2013Megasteel<\/strong> yield point is more than twice as much, at 560 MPa<\/strong>. The PREN<\/strong> index is far more perceivable in the long term and daily use from a consumer\u2019s standpoint. Again, according to Omega<\/strong>, O<\/strong>\u2013Megasteel<\/strong>\u2018s PREN<\/strong> index is several tens of per cent higher than 316L<\/strong>\u2018s compared to Seiko<\/strong>\u2018s Ever Brilliant Steel<\/strong> and 904L<\/strong>, which is the only standardized steel in the industry so far.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

The collection\u2019s hero is \u2013 without a doubt \u2013 the Grade 5 titanium<\/strong> model reissuing the prototype tested during<\/a> Victor Vescovo\u2019s expedition to the bottom of the Mariana Trench<\/strong>. Titanium ensures the big hefty case an unmatched lightness compared to its full steel siblings. Please consider that the full steel Ultra Deep<\/strong> weighs more than 200 g<\/strong>, whereas a titanium Ultra Deep<\/strong> is equally much lighter and a halo product. However, no material can compare the new steel\u2019s shine and premium feel. You might opt for steel on rubber and save some weight as an option.<\/p>\n

Ultra Deep: first thoughts<\/h3>\n

Kudos to Omega<\/strong> for breaking the rules and investing considerable resources into a niche yet flagship product, the outcomes being O<\/strong>\u2013Megasteel<\/strong> and a long list of patents regarding the case, glass and gaskets design, which is specific to this collection.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

My favorite is the Ultra Deep in Orange<\/strong>; it\u2019s the ultimate luxury tool watch and quintessentially Omega<\/strong>; in contrast, the smoked blue dial looks too similar to the Deepsea<\/strong> and dilutes the product\u2019s technical leadership. The Omega Ultra Deep<\/strong> costs 12,000 Euros<\/strong> approximate. It\u2019s the most expensive \u201cSeamaster\u201d ever, but you get much (technological) bang for the bucks, and the build quality is supreme.<\/p>\n

The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M green dial<\/h2>\n

Here is a range extender, though with some nice touch to it. The first-ever Seamaster Diver 300M Green Edition<\/strong> keeps enlarging a product range overhauled in 2018<\/strong><\/a>. The green ceramic bezel comes with a Grand Feu<\/strong> enamel white diving scale; Grand Feu<\/strong> is usually reserved for classic timepieces. I can\u2019t wait to see how it looks in the metal and compare it against the ordinary model.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

The Diver 300M Green<\/strong> retains its 42 mm<\/strong> wide and 13,56 mm<\/strong> thick case in terms of product specs. Like it or not, a Seamaster Diver 300M<\/strong> is the most elegant (and wearable) premium professional diver whose hallmark case and bracelet design are easily recognizable. Unfortunately, it is not as affordable as once, anymore. However, its 5,800 euros<\/strong> sticker price (steel on steel) still is reasonable across Omega<\/strong>\u2018s product portfolio.<\/p>\n

The Omega Speedmaster 57 calibre 9906<\/h2>\n

The new Speedmaster 57<\/strong> is no less relevant than the Ultra Deep<\/strong> and far more significant to the brand\u2019s bottom line. While the former is about heftiness, outstanding performances and muscular design, the new hand-wound Speedy 57\u2032<\/strong> offering is an ode to sleekness and sophistication.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

While a one-to-one 321-powered CK 2915<\/strong> reissue (Canopus Gold excluded) is not in the roadmap, Omega<\/strong> has tirelessly improved the two-counter layout by revisiting the formula inside and out and slimming down the case size.<\/p>\n

Game changer: the Omega 9906 movement<\/h3>\n

The new Speedmaster 57<\/strong> houses the handsome Omega<\/strong> hand-wound calibre 9906<\/strong>, whose no-date edition equips the Omega Chronoscope<\/strong> introduced last year. The 9906<\/strong> adds, therefore, the date window and stands out for the exposed one-piece bridge entirely decorated with C\u00f4tes de Arabesque<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

The calibre feels like a Swiss decorated yet vaguely inspired Saxon mechanical movement (the three-quarter bridge). It\u2019s large and measures just 6,4 mm<\/strong> in thickness, making the new Omega Speedmaster 57<\/strong> measure less than 13 mm<\/strong>, hence thinner than a Moonwatch 3861<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Refinement all around<\/h3>\n

The case comes in a close to 40 mils<\/strong> size; the dial preserves the two-register easy to read layout, which includes Chrono hours and minutes at three. As long as the chronograph keeps running, this layout allows the measurement of a second-time zone. Nonetheless, I would have expected a longer power reserve.<\/p>\n

The 2022 Omega Speedmaster \u201957: first thoughts<\/h3>\n

Remove the date window, and you\u2019ll get a superb option to a classic Moonwatch<\/strong> and a more affordable alternative to an Omega 321<\/strong>. Reducing the case width from 41,5 to 40,5 mm<\/strong> and adopting the Apollo 11<\/strong> inspired bracelet make it a terrific buying option.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

Also, the 9906<\/strong> is a column-wheel operated movement; here is why the sticker price stops at around 10,000 Euros<\/strong>. You can opt for a set of coloured dials alongside the main one adopting vintage Super<\/strong>\u2013Luminova<\/strong>\u00ae and a sandwich dial for the first time.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

It looks bizarre, but I hardly understand why the new models offer 50 meters of water resistance<\/strong> instead of 100 meters<\/strong>, as with the outgoing models.<\/p>\n

Holy Grail: the new Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Moonshine Gold<\/h2>\n

After their official unveiling, the world watch community has seen Omega<\/strong> supporters against Rolex<\/strong> supporters, the latter claiming they both look too similar to a Gold Daytona<\/strong>. While it is no surprise that Omega<\/strong> is challenging Rolex<\/strong>, either a Daytona<\/strong> or a Moonwatch<\/strong> boast such different pedigree, history, and technical specifications that I don\u2019t get this kind of debate.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

The two new Moonwatch Omega<\/strong> are the second Moonshine Gold<\/strong> iteration following the gold Apollo 11<\/strong> staggering success, and add the sobriety the Limited Edition Apollo 11<\/strong> model was somewhat missing.<\/p>\n

\"omega<\/p>\n

Compared to the Sedna Gold<\/strong> variants, green and black inlays on the bezel come in ceramics. On the green Moonwatch<\/strong>, the PVD-treated dial smoothens the shining yellow Gold<\/strong>, while the other model\u2019s dial is in Moonshine Gold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 2022 Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Moonshine Gold: early thoughts<\/h3>\n

With the new Moonwatch Moonshine Gold<\/strong>, the collection\u2019s premium offering is now complete. You can now order a 3861<\/strong> in Sedna<\/strong> or Moonshine Gold<\/strong>. I\u2019ll pick, no doubt, the green<\/strong> Moonwatch<\/strong> on a leather strap over the integrated rubber strap Moonwatch Moonshine Gold<\/strong> \u201cPanda\u201d<\/em>. An integrated rubber strap is no Moonwatch<\/strong> by all means. Prices start at \u20ac 26,200<\/strong> for the Green Moonwatch<\/strong> on a leather strap and stop at \u20ac 38,900<\/strong> for the Moonwatch Moonshine Gold Panda<\/strong> with the bracelet.<\/p>\n
