The history of the Citizen Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection is one of the most exciting in the history of\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0watches and the world of diving and sports watches too.<\/p>\n

If you love\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0watches, whether they are those powered by an\u00a0Eco<\/strong>\u2013Drive<\/strong>\u00a0movement or a robust (and virtually unstoppable)\u00a0Miyota<\/strong>\u00a0mechanical movement, there\u2019s no doubt that the\u00a0Citizen Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection is the technological pinnacle of the brand\u2019s offering, and a successful story that turns 30 this year.<\/p>\n

We are a few days away from\u00a0Baselworld 2019<\/strong>\u2018s opening ceremony, and I\u2019m willing to share with you a few notes about the untold story behind the origins of the\u00a0Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection and what we might expect\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0to launch on this extraordinary occasion, including some product previews.<\/p>\n

The Citizen Promaster collection\u2019s most recent evolution.<\/h2>\n

The Japanese have set industry standards, especially among sports watches, that many other watch companies have then successfully applied.\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0has produced, over the years, and still does, watches featuring cutting-edge technology and excellent product reliability, geared towards the accessible market segment.<\/p>\n

However, the brand has in recent years worked hard to step-up and grow its brand awareness and price point accordingly; a strategy the brand initially rolled-out in\u00a02013<\/strong>\u00a0when it launched the modern\u00a0Promaster Altichron<\/strong>\u00a0collection along with some new\u00a0Concept Watches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Design wise, the\u00a02013 Citizen Promaster Altichron<\/strong>\u00a0marked a turning point for\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>, in my opinion, and the new style the brand decided to introduce, back then, has consistently influenced all the new products that have followed. Regarding the\u00a0Altichron<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0titanium<\/strong>, I was among the very first to own one, in\u00a0Italy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The story behind the Citizen Promaster collection: it all started with the Citizen Parashock and the Citizen Parawater<\/h2>\n

My aim is not to talk about the history of\u00a0Citizen<\/strong> watches that I will analyze in a separate article, or the brand\u2019s dedicated page. I want instead to talk the products that lay the foundation of the widely acclaimed\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection; like the iconic\u00a0Aqualand<\/strong>, for example, that is a milestone among diver\u2019s watches and that my peers and I wrapped around our wrist during our teenage.<\/p>\n

\"citizen<\/p>\n

Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the very few vertically integrated manufactures, a company where not only are all the parts crafted but so are the tools and machinery to make those parts. It is therefore interesting to share what came before the\u00a0Citizen Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0watch collection, proof positive of the Japanese approach to technological innovation and\u00a0Citizen Watch<\/strong>\u2018s engineers\u2019 challenging spirit.<\/p>\n

\"1959<\/p>\n

Two are the dates that marked the birth of the modern\u00a0Citizen Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection:\u00a01956<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a01959<\/strong>. In\u00a01956<\/strong>,\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0produced its first shock-resistant watch, the\u00a0Citizen Parashock<\/strong>\u00a0and in\u00a01959<\/strong>\u00a0it launched its first diving watch, the\u00a0Citizen Parawater<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Japanese brand organized, to prove the anti-shock properties of the newly released\u00a0Citizen Parashock<\/strong>, some public demonstrations across\u00a0Japan<\/strong>, such as the one held in front of the\u00a0Kyoto<\/strong>\u00a0railway station, in which a team of engineers dropped a\u00a0Citizen Parashock<\/strong>\u00a0from a helicopter. All the tests were successful: after each of these demonstrations, the\u00a0Parashock<\/strong>\u00a0was still ticking.<\/p>\n

Three years later,\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0debuted the\u00a0first water<\/strong>\u2013resistant<\/strong>\u00a0Japanese watch<\/strong>\u00a0and one of the very first diver\u2019s watches in the world. Both projects confirmed that\u00a0Japan<\/strong>\u00a0was a great contender in developing new technologies, and, little known fact, was a fair competitor to Swiss brands in making excellent and innovative mechanical timepieces too.<\/p>\n

In the case of the\u00a0Parawater<\/strong>,\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0performed two tests, the first one held in\u00a01959<\/strong>, where the brand\u2019s technicians tied a watch to a buoy and threw it from a ship located in front of the Japanese coasts. The buoy was then towed to the shore and the timepiece, once arrived at its destination, was thoroughly checked to verify its effective operation.<\/p>\n

\"citizen<\/p>\n

In a second experiment, the\u00a0Trans<\/strong>\u2013Pacific<\/strong>\u00a0Test<\/strong>,\u00a0130 Parawaters<\/strong>\u00a0were anchored to various floating buoys, specifically designed for doing this experiment, and launched from the deck of a ship in the\u00a0Pacific Ocean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Ocean currents carried buoys and timepieces towards the\u00a0North American<\/strong>\u00a0coast. The journey of the watches lasted about a year, and when the buoys and the\u00a0Parawaters<\/strong>\u00a0were finally recovered, they were still working.<\/p>\n

The first Citizen Promaster watch<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Citizen Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection was launched in\u00a01989<\/strong>\u00a0and sported three models. It initially included the\u00a0Aqualand<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0Marine<\/strong>\u00a0category (the\u00a0Aqualand<\/strong>, alone, was initially introduced in\u00a01985<\/strong>) featuring\u00a0caliber C020<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0ISO<\/strong>\u00a06425<\/strong>\u00a0certification; the\u00a0Altichron<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0caliber C040<\/strong>\u00a0equipped with an\u00a0altimeter<\/strong>\u00a0from \u2013300m<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a05000m<\/strong>\u00a0and the forerunner of current satellite and radio-controlled timepieces belonging to the\u00a0Promaster Sky<\/strong>\u00a0category, boasting\u00a0caliber C080<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0world time setting function<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Aqualand<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is the only one out of those three to have remained almost unchanged over the last thirty years and is the oldest\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0in a collection that currently includes the\u00a02017 Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive Professional Diver 1000 BN7020<\/strong>\u201309E<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a02014 Aqualand Depth Meter BN2024<\/strong>\u201305E<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0for example.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Citizen Promaster Aqualand<\/strong>\u00a0officially debuted in\u00a01985<\/strong>\u00a0and was the first dive watch equipped with a digital depth indicator.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Citizen Promaster Aqualand<\/strong>\u00a0thus revolutionized the world of professional diving because, for the first time in the history of diving, a brand had come with a true divers\u2019 wristwatch, featuring a digital depth gauge, powered by three lithium batteries hermetically sealed by a case back secured via six screws.<\/p>\n

Three years before marketing the\u00a0Aqualand<\/strong>,\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0watch had proved already its expertise in crafting instruments for professionals when it released the\u00a0Citizen Professional 1300m\u00a0<\/strong>(1982<\/strong>), a professional divers\u2019 watch made of\u00a0titanium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Citizen Professional 1300m<\/strong>\u00a0was the third in a row of watches that included two other variants, both in\u00a0titanium<\/strong>, that guaranteed a water resistance of up to\u00a0800m<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0300m<\/strong>, respectively (the photo below is property of\u00a0andrema on\u00a0watchmen.forum-nation.com).<\/p>\n

These three timepieces were part of the\u00a0Titanium Professional collection<\/strong>\u00a0and the forerunners of the modern\u00a0Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection just as was the\u00a0Aqualand<\/strong>\u00a0in its original version to the first\u00a0Promaster<\/strong>\u00a0collection.<\/p>\n

Regarding the\u00a0Titanium Professional<\/strong>\u00a0range, we\u2019re talking about professional watches made in limited quantities and highly sought-after by collectors, in particular, the\u00a0Titanium Professional 1300m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From\u00a01989<\/strong>\u00a0onwards, the collection has rapidly grown, including many more timepieces like the\u00a0Citizen Promaster JP3000<\/strong>\u201353L<\/strong>\u00a0or the\u00a0Citizen Promaster JP3020<\/strong>\u201356L<\/strong>, just to name a few.<\/p>\n

What to expect at Baselworld 2019?<\/h2>\n

The new\u00a0Citizen Promaster Aqualand<\/strong>\u00a0is undoubtedly at the center of this year\u2019s celebrations and will be launched in many variations. The new\u00a0Aqualand<\/strong>\u00a0has an\u00a0Eco<\/strong>\u2013Drive<\/strong>\u00a0movement and aesthetically draws inspiration from the original model.\u00a0Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0has begun to introduce it in new colors and as a limited edition watch on some markets.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Citizen Promaster 200m Diver BN2030<\/strong>\u201388L<\/strong>\u00a0Team Kuroshio Limited Edition<\/strong>, for example, was created in partnership with the\u00a0Kuroshio Team<\/strong>, which participates in an international challenge that involves\u00a022 countries<\/strong>\u00a0and aims at precisely mapping a large area of the ocean placed\u00a04000 meters<\/strong>\u00a0below the sea \u200b\u200blevel.<\/p>\n
