How often have you caught me writing about diver\u2019s\u00a0watches? Many times!\u00a0How often have I talked about independent brands and the passion of\u00a0their creators? Less often than those brands deserve and it is a habit\u00a0that I will start getting into, because many of the brave\u00a0entrepreneurs who work to re-launch those brands are driven by a real\u00a0passion for those products and their history.<\/p>\n

The passion for diver\u2019s watches is like the passion for motorbikes \u2013\u00a0it has no boundaries and no class difference<\/h2>\n

I have a strong passion for authentic and radical diver\u2019s watches.\u00a0When someone introduces me to a new diver\u2019s watch I don\u2019t care anymore\u00a0about what season we are in \u2013 I wear my Orient Pro Saturation Diver<\/strong><\/span><\/a> as\u00a0much in winter as in summer and I go regularly to the mountains and I\u00a0write with gusto about historical re-issues, like the Seiko Prospex 1968 Automatic Diver\u2019s Re<\/strong>\u2013<\/span><\/a>creation Limited Edition SLA025<\/span><\/a><\/strong> which, as you can see from the\u00a0photos in that\u00a0article, was worn in combination with a suit before\u00a0being taken to the beach.<\/p>\n

\"Aquadive-batyscaphe-100ss-dive-watch-2\"When it comes to independent brands, I am\u00a0actually looking forward to trying on an Italian diver\u2019s watch and, in\u00a0the meantime, I discovered a brand I did not know existed. One day I\u00a0walked into Orologeria Duomo<\/strong> \u2013 a Milanese shop specialized in trading-in and trading-out new and used timepieces.\u00a0This store shares a common feature with Horbiter<\/strong>\u00ae \u2013 it takes\u00a0photography very seriously and takes in-studio HD pics of all the watches\u00a0on display.<\/p>\n

The photos of the Aquadive<\/strong> Bathyscaphe 100SS<\/strong> that you\u00a0can see in this article are the\u00a0 property of Orologeria Duomo<\/strong>. About this product \u2013\u00a0I think a diver\u2019s watch is like a motorbike,\u00a0as\u00a0everyone likes it and it is the only timepiece that you can always wear\u00a0throughout the summer. Scott Carpenter<\/strong>, the famous\u00a0American\u00a0astronaut, wore an Aquadive<\/strong> on his wrist when, in the early 60s, he\u00a0used to train in a pool to get himself ready for the Mercury<\/strong> mission.\u00a0The reborn Aquadive<\/strong> is managed by the same person who re-launched the\u00a0Doxa<\/strong> brand and decided to remain faithful to the original concept of\u00a0the watch, bringing back to life the historic diver\u2019s watch with a\u00a0tonneau case from the 70s (the golden age for fans of diver\u2019s watches\u00a0and a period of constant development of diving techniques and\u00a0technologies).<\/p>\n

What must a professional diver\u2019s\u00a0watch feature to be defined as one? An exceptional sturdiness, the ISO 6425<\/strong> certification that testifies the design quality (they are tested one\u00a0by one and not by random samples), a rating of resistance to the\u00a0appropriate depth (> 200m<\/strong>) and a perfect readability, despite the fact\u00a0that\u00a0we live in an era of sophisticated digital back-up systems for\u00a0diving. An Aquadive<\/strong> Bathyscaphe 100SS<\/strong> is the synthesis of these\u00a0simple but solid concepts, which remain the basis of the crafting of a\u00a0true diver\u2019s watch.<\/p>\n

About the Aqua Dive Bathyscaphe 100SS<\/h2>\n

The brand launched an entire product range, but the 100SS<\/strong> is the\u00a0quintessential\u00a0diver\u2019s watch\u00a0in its most ancestral form. The\u00a043mm<\/strong> case is the faithful reproduction of the original 1972 model<\/strong>. It\u00a0is made of AISI\u00a0316L<\/strong> \u2013 a non-exclusive standard in the current\u00a0panorama, but, at the same time, not too common either, considering\u00a0the price range of the Aquadive<\/strong> (it retails at about \u20ac\u00a02,200<\/strong>) and,\u00a0what matters the most, this timepiece\u2019s case is made in Europe<\/strong>, more\u00a0specifically in Germany<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Aquadive-batyscaphe-100ss-dive-watch-5\"An entire page of the brand\u2019s official\u00a0website is devoted to the description of the construction of the case,\u00a0the dial, the hands and so on. The page gives a clear vision of the\u00a0origin of\u00a0all the components \u2013 a message directed to the customer and\u00a0an indirect message to some emblazoned brands that do not manufacture\u00a0all of their products in Europe. The Aquadive<\/strong> Bathyscaphe 100SS<\/strong> is\u00a0designed to reach a depth of 1000m<\/strong>, so it was also designed to be used\u00a0during saturation diving.<\/p>\n

\"Aquadive-batyscaphe-100ss-dive-watch-3\"It is equipped helium release valve (that I, however, always underline it is not mandatory), but that valve was cleverly positioned between the lugs, rather than on the case-middle (a very bad location, in my\u00a0honest opinion). The 120<\/strong>\u2013click<\/strong> rotating bezel<\/strong> features a ceramic insert\u00a0with a graduated scale and, this yet another valuable historical\u00a0reference, the strap is an Isofrane<\/strong> that was often chosen in the past by connoisseurs\u00a0and professionals of the sea depths. Sturdity can also be seen in the\u00a0choice of the caliber; an ETA 2836<\/strong>\u20132<\/strong> with 42 hours of power reserve<\/strong>\u00a0that can be adjusted to 5 different positions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Yes or No?<\/h2>\n

The Aquadive<\/strong> Bathyscaphe 100SS<\/strong> was produced in a single batch\u00a0containing 500 specimens<\/strong>. Each specimen costs \u20ac 2,150<\/strong>: would it have\u00a0been more attractive if the retail price had stopped at the limit of\u00a0the \u20ac 2000<\/strong> psychological threshold? I do not know, perhaps it would, but to be honest with you,\u00a0the logic of the\u00a0threshold price could be a teaser for the customer and it is something\u00a0that big watch groups use often to generate economies of scale by\u00a0producing their timepieces in the Far East<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Aquadive-batyscaphe-100ss-dive-watch-1\"Personally, this is a practice that I don\u2019t like much. Truth is that,\u00a0on this watch, volumes, specifications and the crafting of the case,\u00a0the dial and the bezel are of high level, it seems as if they were\u00a0manufactured\u00a0in a fine mechanics workshop and these are manufacturing\u00a0choices that affect the final price, but that also guarantee, on paper, a\u00a0long-term product\u00a0quality.<\/p>\n

\"Aquadive-batyscaphe-100ss-dive-watch-4\"Many commercial diver\u2019s watches can undergo\u00a0a performance, brightness, color of the dial deterioration process\u00a0in the medium\u00a0term \u2013 I have witnessed this and I am sure you have too.\u00a0The choices made by this brand are geared towards quality in the long\u00a0run and\u00a0this is one of the drivers that might lead to purchasing such a\u00a0timepiece. In that sense, the retail price can be considered enticing\u00a0\u2013 the style is very beautiful and evocative but this is, of course, my\u00a0personal opinion.<\/p>\n
