The Geneva Watch Days<\/strong> are a great venue, but not as powerful and covered as the global watch fairs; yet, they\u2019ve been a chance for Parmigiani Fleurier<\/strong> to celebrate their first 25<\/strong>th<\/sup> anniversary<\/strong>. Parmigiani<\/strong>\u2018s pedigree is so quintessentially old-school Swiss Made that it comes with no surprise that most people usually associate it with the brands gathered under the AHCI<\/strong> (independent watchmakers).<\/p>\n

A glimpse at the brand\u2019s timepieces, calibres, and sales volumes proves it is super-exclusive, apart from the Tonda GT<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, which is Parmigiani<\/strong>\u2018s take on the premium luxury sports watch. That experience somehow affected the kind of unique, distinctive fusion of technical prowess, gracious style and craftsmanship we were used to while discovering any new Parmigiani<\/strong> watch.<\/p>\n

While I praise the brand for exploring uncharted territory, I also think the GT<\/strong> is below the standard you\u2019d expect from a timepiece whose name is associated with watchmaking this excellent, inside and out. Here is where the new company\u2019s leadership began the product portfolio\u2019s overhaul.<\/p>\n

The new Tonda PF collection<\/h2>\n

The premium luxury sports watch in steel is a must-have, for any mainstream or niche watchmaker; it involves brand image and bottom line, first and foremost, and covers all markets. If we exclude unconventional brands like MB&F<\/strong> or Urwerk<\/strong>, to cite a few, you won\u2019t miss a luxury sports watch in steel in your collection if you\u2019re a standard manufacturer; the Streamliner<\/strong><\/span><\/a> is a stunning success to brands like H<\/strong>. Moser & Cie.<\/strong>\u00a0as it is the Antarctique<\/strong> to Czapek Gen\u00e8ve<\/strong>. Get it right, and you\u2019ll find new customers knocking at your door.<\/p>\n

The Tonda GT<\/strong> is a good concept, not the final stage for the refined Parmigiani<\/strong> customer. Guido Terreni<\/strong>, the new CEO, is a key piece in the new puzzle, and the man who\u2019s been given the task to steer Parmigiani<\/strong> towards new excellence, while, first things first, fixing the areas where Parmigiani<\/strong> is weak; case in point, the luxury sports watch can count on Terreni<\/strong>\u2018s terrific background.<\/p>\n

Parmigiani Tonda PF Micro-rotor<\/h2>\n

The \u201cMicro-rotor\u201d names\u00a0aims at pure refinement and comes with a \u201cLess is more\u201d<\/em> approach. The new collection\u2019s pillars are a sleek no-frills design, insane attention to details and proportions. With the flamboyant \u201cParmigiani Fleurier\u201d<\/em> wording removed, the only hallmark you\u2019ll find is the gold-applied PF logo<\/strong> either on the dial and clasp; it looks smooth, refined, pleasing.<\/p>\n

The dial showcases a finicky engine turning with a Barley<\/strong> pattern, paired with a contrasting and slightly recessed outer ring whose small gap against the sapphire crystal is outstanding. Gold multi-faceted indexes are applied across the two surfaces. It comes with an understated, refined dark grey, a bit too dark for me. I hope future range extenders adopt more vivid tones to help the wearer enjoy the painstaking engine-turning decoration to a greater extent.<\/p>\n

\"parmigiani-tonda-pf-micro-rotor-gold-1\"<\/p>\n

The case to dial to bracelet combo has undergone a thorough redesign: the bezel is thin and comes in platinum (on the steel model), showcasing knurled and polished finish; the dial ends up looking broader than ever before. The Parmigiani<\/strong>\u2013styled hour and minute hands<\/strong> are in white gold too.<\/p>\n

From a specification point of view, it measures 40 mm<\/strong> across<\/strong> and just 7.8 mm in thickness<\/strong>; it means the new Tonda PF Micro-rotor<\/strong> thus joins the exclusive club of high-end ultra-thin watches, once ruled by two, now-discontinued (or about to be discontinued) timepieces, the Nautilus<\/strong> and the 15202<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With Vacheron Constantin<\/strong> oddly not offering an ultra-thin Overseas<\/strong> in steel, the Tonda PF<\/strong>\u2018s fiercest challenger is the Bulgari Octo Finissimo<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (engineered by Mr Terreni), which cannot provide a comparable level of decorative refinement to the most discerning watch connoisseur.<\/p>\n

The Tonda PF Micro-rotor<\/strong> adopts the 3-mm thick PF 703 calibre<\/strong>. The micro-rotor is in platinum<\/strong>, either on the steel or rose gold versions, and adorned with a guilloch\u00e9 \u201cgrain d\u2019orge\u201d<\/em> design. I appreciate Parmigiani<\/strong>\u2018s ubiquitous human touch to set the PF<\/strong> apart from its entirely industrially crafted sibling.<\/p>\n

\"parmigiani-tonda-pf-micro-rotor-gold\"<\/p>\n

The devil is the details, as with the case back see-through crystal, for instance: it is slightly cambered to enhance comfort once on your wrist. Paired with the Parmigiani<\/strong> lightened integrated bracelet, let\u2019s expect the Tonda PF Micro-rotor<\/strong> to gently taper the wrist, something I\u2019m eager to find out anytime soon. Also, take a look at how classy is the rose gold option. Sticker prices are 21,000 Euros<\/strong> for the Tonda PF in steel<\/strong>, and 49,000 Euros<\/strong> for the rose gold PF<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Parmigiani Tonda PF Chronograph<\/h2>\n

The chronograph preserves the slim PF<\/strong>\u2018s design cues. It draws style and proportions from the collection\u2019s \u201ctalking piece,\u201d details and guilloche while replacing the grey with a more attractive deep blue Pantone. With that said, it\u2019s a whole different watch; at 12.4 mm in thickness<\/strong> and 42 mm in diameter<\/strong>, the Tonda PF Chronograph<\/strong> is an ordinary Chrono from a size perspective and far more attractive as we scroll down the specs\u2019 sheet.<\/p>\n

The calibre PF 070<\/strong> is a stunning integrated chronograph movement operating at 5 Hz<\/strong> and with 65 hours of power reserve<\/strong> when fully wound, as technically seductive as aesthetically pleasing. The redesigned winding mass\u2019 PF logo<\/strong> is unique: the \u201cP\u201d and \u201cF\u201d float inside the oval external ring thanks to a tiny sapphire crystal applied in between.<\/p>\n

\"parmigiani-tonda-pf-chronograph-steel\"<\/p>\n

Look at the stunning chronograph movement; the overall design is sleek but nothing short of ordinary, the biggest letdown being it\u2019s a hefty and big watch, and far more so if you decide to opt for the gold one. The Parmigiani Tonda PF Chronograph<\/strong> retails for 28,000 Euros in steel<\/strong> and 63,000 Euros in pink gold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Parmigiani Tonda PF Annual Calendar<\/h2>\n

Here is the Tonda PF Annual Calendar<\/strong>, the last technical and aesthetic take on the new design code, whose origin, the Barley pattern, is not unknown but once adopted on the luxurious Ovale Pantograph \u2018Guilloche\u2019 Barley Grain Dial<\/strong>. The Annual Calendar<\/strong> is a fully analogue calendar watch with a retrograde pointer date display.<\/p>\n

I love the layout since there\u2019s no window date at all, something I\u2019d appreciate on the PF chronograph<\/strong> too. All in all, the most wanted luxury chronograph has no date display. A double-hemisphere 122-year moon-phase display<\/strong> is a nice touch and makes the PF Annual Calendar<\/strong> look and feel like a perpetual calendar.<\/p>\n

My only concern is that the calibre is too small in such a case, as you can spot via the rearview, which makes the overall design less compelling than the chronograph. The Parmigiani Tonda PF Annual Calendar<\/strong> costs 35,000 Euros in steel<\/strong> and 70,000 Euros in pink gold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Parmigiani Tonda PF Split Seconds Chronograph<\/h2>\n

The new Tonda PF<\/strong> collection also includes the super-exclusive new Split Seconds Chronograph<\/strong>, a flagship model manufactured in just 25 pieces<\/strong>, to mark Parmigiani<\/strong>\u2018s 25<\/strong>th<\/sup> Anniversary<\/strong>, alongside the entire Tonda PF<\/strong> collection. Watch connoisseurs will recognize the legendary ChronOr<\/strong>\u2018s foothold inside and out; the Split Seconds Chronograph<\/strong> is the epitome of Parmigiani<\/strong>\u2018s expertise in conceiving the most exclusive premium luxury chronographs.<\/p>\n

The new case and bracelet come in 950 platinum<\/strong>; the same goes with the dial, whose somewhat frosted-looking finish adds to the \u201cLess is more\u201d<\/em> brand\u2019s new credo. The rose gold hand-wound PF 361 calibre<\/strong> is a joy to the eyes and a masterpiece capable of attracting the most distinguished watch collector.<\/p>\n

From a technical perspective, the 361<\/strong> is an integrated 5 Hz chronograph movement<\/strong>, with the two-column wheels visible through the transparent case back, offering instantaneous and vibration-free jump start, stop and reset of each Chrono hand.<\/p>\n

Aesthetically, it adopts a gold main plate and skeletonized bridges<\/strong> (with bevelled corners), thus completing a package that won\u2019t fit, at 15 mm in thickness<\/strong> and considerable weight, any wrist. The Parmigiani Tonda PF Split Seconds Chronograph<\/strong> is the manifesto of the brand\u2019s prowess, and the retail price is in line with such craftsmanship and exclusivity:\u00a0155,000 Euros<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n

Overall, the new Parmigiani Tonda PF<\/strong> collection marks a massive step up and is a stronger contender in the luxury sports class of products. The Tonda GT<\/strong> remains a brand enabler in the lower class; the new ones are far more refined, technically and esthetically, and pricey. I do not foresee a great future for the standard GT<\/strong> collection if you ask me. The Tonda PF<\/strong> is the first pillar of a more straightforward, sophisticated approach to Haute Horlogerie at Parmigiani<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"parmigiani-tonda-pf-split-seconds-chronograph-1\"<\/p>\n

From a product perspective, the Tonda PF Micro-rotor<\/strong> is a winner and is, as stated above, a free player with no significant competitors and a long list of buyers looking for the ultimate ultra-thin watch on a bracelet, with few or no options at all. Therefore, the choice to opt for all things ultra-thin is an intelligent move by Parmigiani<\/strong> to extend its appeal further and grow the brand.<\/p>\n

Scrolling down the collection, I reckon both the chronograph and the annual calendar are good options, but not game-changers. I\u2019d pick the Chrono from a technical standpoint; it is the most luxurious 5Hz chronograph<\/strong> on sale (Zenith\u2019s positioning is different and lower), but I\u2019d take the PF Annual Calendar<\/strong> instead, as long as sleekness concerns.<\/p>\n
