As a result, it is only natural for the people of this little island to start asking important, existential questions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Does hording loo roll really make you immune to the virus?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>When will it be legal to fire anyone who coughs, even a little, into low orbit?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>After this banal ordeal is over, where would I go on my fever driven shopping spree in order to buy myself a timepiece for less than whatever exorbitant price my local dealer has conjured up? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, I do not have an answer for the first two questions, but I might just have an answer for that last one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-factors-should-i-consider\">What factors should I consider?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Buying a watch abroad can be a sneaky way to avoid lengthy waiting lists, inflated prices, or just limited stock at your local dealership. However, there are a few things to be aware of before you go to the lost far-flung <strong>Rolex<\/strong> dealership:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1-1024x684.jpeg\" alt=\"Rolex GMT-Master 2 126710 BLNR batman jubilee bracelet\" class=\"wp-image-54976\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1-1024x684.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1-120x80.jpeg 120w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1-480x320.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1-600x400.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Rolex-GMT-Master-2-126710-BLNR-batman-jubilee-bracelet-caliber-3285-3-1.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Currency<\/strong> \u2013 The local currency used to be a big factor in whether you\u2019re going to get a better or worse deal when compared to your native country, but sadly brands such as <strong>Rolex<\/strong> have since caught on.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/petite-geneve-petrovic-rolex-budapest-4.17358f726803.jpg\" alt=\"petite geneve petrovic rolex budapest\" class=\"wp-image-58371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/petite-geneve-petrovic-rolex-budapest-4.17358f726803.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/petite-geneve-petrovic-rolex-budapest-4.17358f726803-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/petite-geneve-petrovic-rolex-budapest-4.17358f726803-120x88.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even eastern European countries such as Serbia now trade using the euro, with <strong>Belgrade<\/strong>\u2019s own dealership, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petitegeneve.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Petite Geneve Petrovic<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, quoting \u20ac<strong>9<\/strong>,<strong>100<\/strong> for a <strong>Rolex Batman 126710<\/strong>, which is more than \u00a3<strong>650<\/strong> above the equivalent <strong>RRP<\/strong> for the same watch in the <strong>UK<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>VAT Refunds<\/strong> \u2013 If I were to buy a watch in <strong>Germany<\/strong>, because I do not live in that country, I am able to file for a <strong>VAT<\/strong> refund (<strong>19<\/strong>% <strong>in<\/strong> <strong>Germany<\/strong>) provided I have the correct identification on my persons i.e. my passport.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Import Tax<\/strong> \u2013 Whilst getting <strong>VAT<\/strong> refunds sounds ideal, it is somewhat a double-edged sword, as when you bring any items you have purchased abroad back into your country, legally you must declare it. In the <strong>UK<\/strong>, this would result in me having to pay <strong>20<\/strong>% <strong>VAT<\/strong> on my previously VAT free purchase, plus duty fees which are <strong>2<\/strong>%, resulting in me paying significantly more than the original <strong>19<\/strong>% <strong>VAT<\/strong> I managed to get off in the first place. This does change from country to country, so this may well be a fantastic idea should you live in countries such as <strong>America<\/strong> or <strong>Australia<\/strong>! Oh and, don\u2019t try smuggling the watch back into your country, if you\u2019re caught it can result in a criminal conviction!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Haggling<\/strong> \u2013 Not an art commonly practiced in western countries, but if you were to go to places such as <strong>China<\/strong>, or more specifically <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong>, to not haggle would be downright blasphemous. It\u2019s significantly harder to haggle for brands such as <strong>Rolex<\/strong>, especially watches made of precious metals, but that\u2019s not to say that it\u2019s impossible to get a thousand or so Yuan knocked off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Demand<\/strong> \u2013 The demand for luxury goods influences the stock available in that country, but most significantly the second-hand value of watches. The country with the biggest luxury goods market was the <strong>US<\/strong> (somewhat predictably), followed by <strong>China<\/strong>, <strong>Japan<\/strong>, <strong>Italy<\/strong>, <strong>France<\/strong> and in 6<sup>th<\/sup> place, the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong>, according to a study by <strong>Statista<\/strong> in <strong>2020<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"so-which-countries-would-i-recommend\">So which countries would I recommend?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s where I get a little stuck; bands such as <strong>Rolex<\/strong> have got their prices carefully selected to be within the ballpark of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rolex-plan-les-ouates.ac3cc721f902-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rolex-plan-les-ouates.ac3cc721f902-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rolex-plan-les-ouates.ac3cc721f902-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rolex-plan-les-ouates.ac3cc721f902-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rolex-plan-les-ouates.ac3cc721f902-120x79.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rolex-plan-les-ouates.ac3cc721f902.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When we take the <strong>RRP<\/strong> for the Rolex 126710 Batman in the most popular global currencies we can clearly see this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GBP<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a37750<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>USD to GBP<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a37939.92<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Euro to GBP<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a37853.20<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HKD to GBP<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a37,984.48<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, considering this, my answer is clear: It depends on where you live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"if-you-live-in-the-uk\">If you live in the UK.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just stay home, and that\u2019s not just for the sake of self-isolation! With the pound\u2019s value disappearing faster than fusilli at my local supermarket, if you were to buy a <strong>Rolex<\/strong> watch abroad and pay <strong>VAT<\/strong> and duties upon importing it, you\u2019ll easily pay 10% or more than you would otherwise pay just buying the damn thing for <strong>RRP<\/strong> in the halls of <strong>Harrods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"if-you-live-in-the-eu\">If you live in the EU.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For pretty much everyone who isn\u2019t already a resident there, the <strong>UK<\/strong> is a pretty compelling choice! With the pound quickly finding itself in the toilet thanks to Brexit and now <strong>Covid<\/strong>\u2013<strong>19<\/strong>, buying a watch in the <strong>UK<\/strong> at <strong>RRP<\/strong>, even if your county\u2019s <strong>VAT<\/strong> is higher than 20%, may well end up cheaper than buying it at home simply due to the toilet that the <strong>UK<\/strong>\u2019s economy finds itself in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"if-you-live-in-the-us\">If you live in the US.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Buy from the <strong>UK<\/strong>. The very definition of a steal, especially if you\u2019ve read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/rolex-daytona-story\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>our article on the Daytona<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and understand the rich and illustrious racing history of the watch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"final-thoughts\">Final Thoughts.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the world economy being in a pit of an unusual state, these prices and speculations are liable to change. However, it is very clear that a huge factor in getting watches on the cheap in other countries simply comes down to <strong>VAT<\/strong> refunds and your country\u2019s import laws. If you live in <strong>America<\/strong>, the world is your <strong>Perpetual Oyster<\/strong>. If you\u2019re in <strong>EU<\/strong> countries, give the <strong>UK<\/strong> a go, but it might be worth just sticking home, less hassle.
