Not any chronograph from any brand, but the <strong>Daytona<\/strong>. I believe this circumstance also derives from being Italian and living in Italy, where <strong>Rolex<\/strong> is the luxury watch par excellence, and the <strong>Rolex Daytona<\/strong> is often an enthusiast\u2019s primary choice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43139\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/tom-kristensen-rolex.jpg\" alt=\"tom kristensen rolex\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/tom-kristensen-rolex.jpg 769w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/tom-kristensen-rolex-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/tom-kristensen-rolex-480x640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Its history is rich and fascinating, and the collection\u2019s link to motor racing is rooted in the first half of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, decades before any other watch brand had ever appeared in a paddock.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"1903-%e2%80%93-1935-the-origins-of-the-rolex-daytona\">1903 \u2013 1935: the origins of the Rolex Daytona<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How many of you are aware of how the <strong>Rolex Daytona<\/strong> came up? If you are familiar with my posts regarding <strong>Rolex<\/strong>, including a recent one <strong>where I compare the brand against a Japanese contender<\/strong> for the very first time, you\u2019ll find out that I repeatedly underline the brand\u2019s motto: \u201c<em>Every Rolex tells a story.<\/em>\u201d That motto is proof positive that <strong>Rolex<\/strong> has long since gone well beyond being merely a luxury watch brand to be a luxury icon instead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43111\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/daytona-beach.jpg\" alt=\"daytona beach\" width=\"800\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/daytona-beach.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/daytona-beach-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/daytona-beach-768x608.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/daytona-beach-480x380.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It seems a <strong>Rolex<\/strong> was the first timepiece to officially wrap around a driver\u2019s wrist during a speed record attempt, and the <strong>Rolex Daytona<\/strong> was a nod to <strong>Daytona Beach<\/strong> that has been, between <strong>1903<\/strong> and <strong>1935<\/strong>, the venue of world-famous speed record attempts. On this hard sand-made soil, Americans and Europeans competed, but two contenders were first-page news: <strong>Sir Malcolm Campbell <\/strong>and <strong>Sir Henry Segrave<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-3.jpg\" alt=\"sir malcolm campbell 3\" width=\"607\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-3.jpg 778w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-3-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-3-768x1012.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-3-480x632.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both British, rich and ambitious, <strong>Campbell<\/strong> and <strong>Segrave<\/strong> fought against each-other several times at <strong>Daytona Beach<\/strong>, a proving ground more suitable for high-speed racing than the British racetrack of <strong>Brooklands<\/strong>, in their quest for exceeding the <strong>300km<\/strong>\/<strong>h<\/strong> threshold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cars and motorbikes that compete nowadays at <strong>Bonneville<\/strong> draw their inspiration from the aircraft-engine powered vehicles engineered by these two English gentlemen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-2.jpg\" alt=\"sir malcolm campbell 2\" width=\"800\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-2-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-2-768x613.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-2-480x383.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Segrave<\/strong> won the first competition, by setting a <strong>328km<\/strong>\/<strong>h<\/strong> speed record onboard its <strong>Sunbeam Mystery S<\/strong>, in <strong>1928<\/strong> <strong>Campbell<\/strong> clinched victory by exceeding <strong>333km<\/strong>\/<strong>h<\/strong> aboard the <strong>Bluebird<\/strong>. The following year <strong>Segrave<\/strong> raised the bar, and achieved a stunning <strong>372km<\/strong>\/<strong>h<\/strong> aboard the <strong>Golden Arrow<\/strong>, thus earning the <strong>New York Times<\/strong>\u2018 headlines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately, he tragically lost his life in <strong>1930<\/strong> during a boat speed record attempt, and <strong>Campbell<\/strong> became the undisputed pioneer of high-speed racing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43137\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell.jpg\" alt=\"sir malcolm campbell\" width=\"800\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-768x572.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/sir-malcolm-campbell-480x357.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the <strong>Bluebird IV<\/strong> and <strong>V<\/strong>, <strong>Sir Malcolm Campbell<\/strong> set a record of <strong>253mph<\/strong> (407km\/h) in <strong>1932<\/strong> and <strong>276mph<\/strong> (445km\/h) in <strong>1935<\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since <strong>1930<\/strong>, <strong>Sir Malcolm Campbell<\/strong> used to daily wear a <strong>Rolex<\/strong>, thus confirming <strong>Campbell<\/strong> as the first international, and spontaneous, ambassador for <strong>Rolex<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In those days, the <strong>Rolex Daytona<\/strong> was not existing, the first <strong>Cosmograph<\/strong> will appear only in <strong>1963<\/strong>, but the brand was already associated with <strong>Daytona<\/strong>, and this paved the way for the chronograph to become legendary.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"1936-1959-the-evolution-of-daytona-beach\">1936-1959: the evolution of Daytona Beach<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As these prototypes kept increasing their top speed, consider the <strong>Bluebird V<\/strong> had a <strong>2<\/strong>.<strong>300HP<\/strong> aircraft-derived engine under its long hood, <strong>Daytona Beach<\/strong>\u2019s surface was not hard enough to guarantee full power delivery, and <strong>Bonneville<\/strong> soon replaced <strong>Daytona<\/strong> as the preferred location for high-speed die-hard fans.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bluebird-1935.jpg\" alt=\"bluebird 1935\" width=\"800\" height=\"627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bluebird-1935.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bluebird-1935-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bluebird-1935-768x602.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bluebird-1935-480x376.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Daytona Beach<\/strong> evolves by converting itself into a racetrack. That is the dawn of the <strong>NASCAR<\/strong> (National Association for Stock Car Racing) championship, but soon this land strip on the ocean waterfront begins to deteriorate as a result of stock cars\u2019 power slides; that\u2019s why the president of <strong>NASCAR<\/strong>, <strong>William France Sr<\/strong>, plans to build a standard racetrack, that officially opened in <strong>1959<\/strong>. Again, the <strong>Rolex<\/strong> <strong>Daytona<\/strong> is a long way off, but the legend of <strong>Daytona<\/strong> has begun, and <strong>Rolex<\/strong> keeps being connected to <strong>Daytona<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"1959-%e2%80%93-2016-the-daytona-international-speedway-and-the-first-ever-rolex-daytona\">1959 \u2013 2016: the Daytona International Speedway and the first-ever Rolex Daytona.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Back then, the <strong>Daytona\u00a0International Speedway<\/strong>\u00a0was a breakthrough: <strong>5<\/strong>.<strong>73km<\/strong> long, it featured 1<strong>2 turns<\/strong>, <strong>2 of which<\/strong> inclined at an outrageous <strong>31<\/strong>\u00b0 to allow drivers reach high speeds while cornering without being rolled out due to centrifugal force.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>William France Sr<\/strong> also created a standard track inside the trio-oval shaped external one, to attract more and more professional race drivers to <strong>Daytona<\/strong>. The legend of the <strong>Rolex Daytona<\/strong> is about to begin, and <strong>Daytona<\/strong> laid the foundations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/rolex-cosmograph-daytona-history.jpg\" alt=\"rolex cosmograph daytona storia\" width=\"571\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/rolex-cosmograph-daytona-history.jpg 731w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/rolex-cosmograph-daytona-history-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/rolex-cosmograph-daytona-history-480x673.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The above-pictured advertisement (source: <em>www.thewatchology.com<\/em>) shows <strong>William France Sr<\/strong> along with his <strong>Rolex Zephyr Oyster Perpetual<\/strong> while he\u2019s talking to celebrity <strong>Paul Whiteman<\/strong>; it further highlights why <strong>Rolex<\/strong> was and still is ahead of the competition: it pioneers communication like nobody else does and has established a unique relationship with its ambassadors from day one: they choose the brand, and not the other way round.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you look closer, in the lower right-hand side of the advertisement, the <strong>Pan<\/strong>\u2013<strong>Am<\/strong> logo reaffirms another iconic partnership signed by <strong>Rolex<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What looks bizarre instead, is that no other brand joined the party, and ever competed with <strong>Rolex<\/strong> in such a fast-growing American business that was and still is unmatched from a business perspective. <strong>Rolex<\/strong> had no competitors along the way.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"1963-the-rolex-cosmograph-the-father-of-the-rolex-daytona\">1963: the Rolex Cosmograph, the father of the Rolex Daytona.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the <strong>Daytona Continental<\/strong>\u2019s first edition, the race winner was awarded a <strong>Rolex<\/strong> watch.
