The long-standing challenge to craft a record-breaking divers\u2019 watch is one of the most fascinating and dates back to the early 60s, involving mainly <strong>European<\/strong> and <strong>Japanese<\/strong> watchmakers, with the former leading the leaderboard thanks to <strong>Rolex<\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/rolex-deepsea-challenge-unrivaled\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Deepsea Challenge<\/strong><\/span><\/a> expedition so far. Until this week that saw <strong>Omega<\/strong> watches make history.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"the-five-deeps-project\">The Five Deeps project.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Five Deeps<\/strong> expedition, as the name itself suggests, is the first attempt ever to reach the deepest spot in each of the five oceans. The last successful stage was held in the <strong>Mariana Trench<\/strong>, in <strong>May<\/strong>, and allowed the team behind that expedition reach the deepest spot ever (<strong>10<\/strong>,<strong>928<\/strong> meters).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"raynald-aeschlimann-victor-vescovo\" src=\"\/media\/CACHE\/images\/uploads\/raynald-aeschlimann-victor-vescovo.249fb906ff34.jpg\" alt=\"raynald-aeschlimann-victor-vescovo\">To accomplish the task, the team led by <strong>Victor Vescovo<\/strong> adopted a submarine crafted by <strong>Triton Submarines<\/strong>, a leading company in designing submarines for private use. In this specific case, the <strong>Florida<\/strong>-based company built an out-of-the-ordinary machine, named <strong>DSV<\/strong> (acronym of <em>Deep Submergence Vehicle<\/em>) \u2013 <strong>Limiting Factor<\/strong>. This machine for undersea and deep-sea exploration, certified by the international maritime authority <strong>DNV<\/strong>\u2013<strong>GL<\/strong> for extensive, repeated dives to extraordinary depths, was key in designing the <strong>Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"what-sets-the-omega-ultra-deep-project-apart-from-the-competition\">What sets the Omega Ultra Deep project apart from the competition.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have often desired <strong>Omega<\/strong> watches to further strengthen its leadership among <strong>divers watches<\/strong> by producing a flagship product, a no-compromise timepiece, true to a foothold that sees <strong>Omega<\/strong> investing much more than its competitors in ground-breaking technology, advanced materials, and new calibers. No brand other than <strong>Omega<\/strong> could have raised the bar so high, in the benchmark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-3\" src=\"\/media\/CACHE\/images\/uploads\/omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-3.e5ccbca93f91.jpg\" alt=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-3\">This project was therefore not just a challenge, but a jab to <strong>Rolex <\/strong>too, and it\u2019s record-breaking <strong>Rolex Deepsea Challenge<\/strong> that had reached the deepest spot of the <strong>Mariana Trench<\/strong> so far, before the <strong>Five Deeps<\/strong> eventually moved a step further, down below. In this case, the approach to conceiving the product is totally different and completely out-of-the-box, and makes the <strong>Ultra Deep Professional<\/strong> project unique, confirming this experience is not a stand-alone, but new products will be offered as these new technologies are going to be fully industrialized.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"case-bezel-case-back-and-the-crown-come-from-the-limiting-factor%e2%80%99s-hull\">Case, bezel, case back and the crown come from the Limiting Factor\u2019s hull.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The parts were machined cutoffs from the <strong>Triton<\/strong>\u2018s grade 5 titanium weld-free hull, and the technique <strong>Omega<\/strong> adopted in coupling case and glass is on par with the <strong>Triton<\/strong>\u2018s viewport design. To effectively manage the stress distribution, the case-to-sapphire assembly is all but ordinary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-2\" src=\"\/media\/CACHE\/images\/uploads\/omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-2.688f03bba818.jpg\" alt=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-2\">Omega engineers took their inspiration from the <strong>Triton<\/strong>\u2018s viewport\u2019s original load-bearing conical design and adopted an innovative joint made of <strong>Liquidmetal<\/strong>\u00ae. There is no additional information regarding technical specs, given that this solution is still under patent.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"resistant-to-15000-meters-and-15000-gauss\">Resistant to 15,000 meters and 15,000 Gauss.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although the <strong>Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional<\/strong> has withstood a pressure corresponding to <strong>11<\/strong>,<strong>000<\/strong> meters, it has been tested to a pressure of up to <strong>15<\/strong>,<strong>000<\/strong> meters. In doing so, I believe <strong>Omega<\/strong> is highlighting the new watch is water resistant to <strong>15<\/strong>,<strong>000 meters<\/strong> as it is magnetic resistant to <strong>15<\/strong>,<strong>000<\/strong> <strong>Gauss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-4\" src=\"\/media\/CACHE\/images\/uploads\/omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-4.07c77ad4738f.jpg\" alt=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-4\">The caliber that beats inside the <strong>Ultra Deep<\/strong> is a <strong>Master Chronometer<\/strong> certified automatic movement, and all the three watches tested during the expedition have been then submitted to the <strong>Metas<\/strong> certification program once back to <strong>Switzerland<\/strong>, and they all flawlessly performed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" id=\"the-omega-seamaster-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional%e2%80%99s-main-specs\">The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional\u2019s main specs.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The case is <strong>52<\/strong>.<strong>5mm<\/strong> but <strong>28mm<\/strong> thick; not that thick, if we consider the huge pressure each of the three watches had to withstand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-5\" src=\"\/media\/CACHE\/images\/uploads\/omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-5.bdcf0123efe6.jpg\" alt=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-5\">Size wise, the case width is on par with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/sihh-2015-panerai-our-full-report\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Limited Edition<\/strong> <strong>Panerai Mare Nostrum<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u2018s; we\u2019re in front of an item that\u2019s not suitable for everyday use, even if it\u2019s way lighter than its peer(s). Aesthetically, the dial is a nod to the latest generation <strong>Planet Ocean<\/strong>. Do we need products like the <strong>Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-6\" src=\"\/media\/CACHE\/images\/uploads\/omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-6.ec02bff4a41e.jpg\" alt=\"omega-planet-ocean-ultra-deep-professional-6\">Of course, we do not, and they\u2019re not intended for standard use, they are instead flagship products with no return on the investment unless the brand engineers most of the technologies patented into one or more new product collections.
