Officine Panerai<\/strong> or, it would be better to say, just\u00a0Panerai<\/strong>, has started the new year with an entirely new vision, based on new collections, advanced materials, and a greater engegement with its fan base. Someone might argue that the \u201cLaboratorio di Idee<\/em>\u201d had already invested a lot in innovation over the years; they introduced new materials and composites like Carbotech<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and BMG<\/strong>\u2013Tech<\/strong>\u00ae<\/span><\/a>, for example, or\u00a0patented ultra-light manufacturing techniques when they first launched the glorious Lo Scienziato<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. The truth is that the Italian brand is still very much linked to its roots and historical collections.<\/p>\n

\"panerai-submersible-chrono-guillaume-nery-edition-pam-982-1\"All the watches\u00a0listed above originally belonged to the \u201cLuminor 1950<\/em>\u201d product family, thus proving they clearly represented a nod to the timepiece designed for and supplied to the Italian Royal Navy<\/strong>.\u00a0Once appointed as CEO<\/strong> of Panerai<\/strong>, Jean<\/strong>\u2013Marc<\/strong> Pontrou\u00e8<\/strong> has, first of all, simplified the offering and divided the historical collection, that has a massive following of die-hard fans (aka the \u201cPaneristi<\/em>\u201d), from the modern take on the original Luminor<\/strong>, the Submersible<\/strong>. The latter is not yet at its full potential in my opinion and aims at attracting customers that never considered a Panerai<\/strong> watch as a buying option.<\/p>\n

\"panerai-guillaume-nery\"Although a BMG<\/strong>\u2013Tech<\/strong>\u00ae\u2019s case design is not so different\u00a0from a PAM 422<\/strong>\u2018s, the time had come to push the boundaries of the Submersible<\/strong> further and better highlight Panerai<\/strong>\u2018s expertise in mastering new materials. Moreover,\u00a0the brand has signed new partnerships that involve professional divers.<\/p>\n

This strategy is in line with Pontrou\u00e8<\/strong>\u2018s approach to product innovation and brand\u2019s experience, something he successfully managed at Roger Dubuis<\/strong> in recent years. Among the first outcomes, I would highlight, for example, the agreement the brand signed with\u00a0Luna Rossa<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, challenger to the 36<\/strong>th<\/sup> America<\/strong>\u2018s Cup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"panerai-submersible-chrono-guillaume-nery-edition-pam-982-3\"The 2019 Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume N\u00e9ry Edition 47mm<\/strong> <\/span>or PAM 982<\/strong> if you prefer, is a perfect example of this new campaign. For those who are not familiar with the brand, the Submersible Chrono Flyback<\/strong> is not a new watch, and the new PAM 982<\/strong>\u00a0is rather a re-styled timepiece named after the\u00a0famous diver\u00a0Guillaume N\u00e9ry<\/strong>, former holder of four world records of apnea.\u00a0Panerai<\/strong>\u2018s designers restyled\u00a0dial and bezel by replacing the black ceramic inlay on the rotating bezel with a matte blue ring and coupled it to a \u201cshark<\/em>\u2013gray<\/em>\u201d dial, whose pattern mimics a shark\u2019s skin\u2019s design.<\/p>\n

\"panerai-submersible-chrono-guillaume-nery-edition-pam-982-2\"The applied indexes are new too: every Submersible<\/strong> now features only applied indexes, in replacement of the Arabic numerals you may find on the 2015 Submersible Chrono Flyback<\/strong>. Proof positive the marketing team has further (and better, in my opinion) categorized the new Submersible<\/strong>. With that said, I reckon the end result is a timepiece that is more colorful and attractive than the too subtle and somehow understated PAM 615<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"panerai-luminor-submersible-1950-3-days-chrono-flyback-automatic-titanio-47mm-pam-615\"Let\u2019s talk about in-house caliber 9100\u00a0<\/strong>for a while: it is a pretty refined automatic movement.\u00a0It\u2019s much easier to find a flyback chronograph encased within an aviator watch\u2019s case than into a diver\u2019s watch\u2019s, but there\u2019s no doubt this combination makes this Submersible<\/strong> more interesting from a technical point of view\u00a0than a standard divers\u2019 watch. A timing instrument for a professional\u00a0diver must be rugged and robust,\u00a0mechanical refinement is usually not on top of a development team\u2019s requirements list.<\/p>\n

\"panerai-submersible-chrono-guillaume-nery-edition-pam-982-4\"Three days of power reserve, two barrels and quick jump start of the central chronograph hand, at the single push of a button, make for exceptional value to a watch that was not conceived as a diver\u2019s watch.\u00a0The Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume N\u00e9ry Edition 47mm<\/strong> retails at \u20ac 18,900<\/strong>, which means\u00a0\u20ac 2,300<\/strong> more than a PAM615<\/strong>\u2018s. We are close to \u20ac 20,000<\/strong>, where you can buy this stunning Limited Edition Submersible<\/strong> or, why not, start thinking of getting your hands-on a Panerai Submersible<\/strong> in gold.<\/p>\n
