In-house mechanical movements are today a must for any watch manufacturer since ETA<\/strong> is not providing its technology outside the Swatch Group<\/strong> any longer. Moreover, designing a new caliber is the yardstick of a brand\u2019s capabilities. The Oris<\/strong> calibers that belong to the 110 family<\/strong>\u00a0of mechanical movements<\/strong> are not often in the news, yet this collection\u00a0represents a best-in-class on the market.<\/p>\n

\"ORIS-Artelier-Calibre-111\"I\u2019ve been long eager to write an article about this caliber, its derivatives, and the Artelier<\/strong> collection too, and share my feelings. After having covered almost every Oris<\/strong> watch in the last two years, including several\u00a0Divers Sixty<\/strong>\u2013Five<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, two Carl Brashear Limited Edition<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>watches and a Pilot<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, I thought time had come to talk more about the Artelier<\/strong> collection along with Oris<\/strong>\u2018s family of in-house hand-wound calibers.<\/p>\n

A brand that I discovered years ago thanks to a former colleague and the ads of its professional divers\u2019 watches<\/h2>\n

The first time I got my hands and eyes on an Oris<\/strong> watch was in 2005<\/strong>. Back then, I worked for FCA<\/strong>, and one of my colleagues had a three-hands Oris<\/strong> watch he used on a daily basis. He was pleased with the timepiece, found it reliable rather than appealing, and took it at a reasonable price. In 2005<\/strong>, my knowledge of Oris<\/strong> was restricted to its big professional divers\u2019 watches, which represent today a niche for enthusiasts and professional divers alike.<\/p>\n

Oris is an independent company<\/h2>\n

Being independent has a disadvantage: it does not allow a company to share investments and standardize costs with other brands, which is instead possible if that company belongs to a big industrial group. It has an advantage conversely: you are hands-free on any new project. The caliber 110<\/strong> was conceived from the ground up and includes technical features so original that I am pretty sure it could have hardly been produced had Oris<\/strong> been part of a big group.<\/p>\n

\"Oris-110-year-anniversary-2014\" I often make comparisons between the watchmaking and the automotive industries: take a look for example at what has Mazda<\/strong> done since it broke its ties with Ford<\/strong>. Many brands belonging to large groups and that share the same average price point with Oris<\/strong>, do not have any in-house caliber in their catalog.<\/p>\n

Oris is over 110 years old.<\/h2>\n

You will not find anywhere else as in the watchmaking industry such a desire to celebrate anniversaries: Communication Managers are aware that these moments\u00a0represent a not-to-be-missed opportunity to highlight the history of a brand and\u00a0anniversaries are therefore a perfect moment to unveil something special, that will positively affect the brand\u2019s image for years to come.<\/p>\n

\"Oris-110-year-anniversary-2014-1\"Oris<\/strong> boasts a long-standing history and the caliber 110<\/strong> was launched in 2014<\/strong> to celebrate the first 110 years<\/strong> of uninterrupted activity.<\/p>\n

Oris was a manufactory until 1981.<\/h2>\n

Between 1904<\/strong> and 1981<\/strong>, Oris<\/strong> built a large 229 calibers<\/strong>; it turned then to develop modules out of ETA<\/strong> base calibers. Whether those calibers might be regarded as 100% in-house or not is hard to tell, as I doubt Oris<\/strong>\u00a0used to produce\u00a0its balance springs internally.<\/p>\n

\"production-calibre-111-gear-trains\"What I often ask myself instead, without being answered yet, is the following: \u201cwhy did Oris opt for a hand-wound caliber<\/em>?\u201d I honestly have no idea but what matters the most is that a big hand-wound caliber is the best gift to watch connoisseurs and a tribute to fine\u00a0watchmaking.<\/p>\n

It is big and has ten days of maximum power reserve<\/h2>\n

The caliber 110<\/strong> has a diameter of 34mm<\/strong> and is reminiscent of those large hand-wound calibers encased in a pocket watch. It vibrates at 3Hz<\/strong> and has ten days of maximum power reserve<\/strong>. The choice of such a high power reserve is no coincidence, in my opinion.\u00a0I reckon engineers at Oris<\/strong> were willing to design a manually-wound caliber without affecting usability, something you can achieve only by guaranteeing a longer power reserve.<\/p>\n

The linear power reserve indicator.<\/h2>\n

If you take a look at the dial of an Oris Artelier Calibre 110 <\/strong>(or 111<\/strong>)\u00a0you immediately notice that one of the two counters on its bi-compax lay-out is the power reserve indicator; it stands out as does a tachometer over a speedometer on a sports car\u2019s dashboard.<\/p>\n

\"ORIS-Artelier-Calibre-113-6\"As soon as the movement is about to run out of charge, the small hand placed at 3 o\u2019clock\u00a0accelerates, thus advising the wearer he or she has to wind-up the watch.<\/p>\n

A single large and capable barrel.<\/h2>\n

One of the features that make the caliber 110<\/strong> easily recognizable at first sight and so appealing is the big barrel placed on top of the main plate and visible through the transparent case back. It is both a remarkable technical feature and a distinctive aesthetic element.<\/p>\n

\"ORIS-Artelier-Calibre-113-5\"To achieve this result, that has allowed engineers to considerably reduce the caliber\u2019s overall thickness, Oris<\/strong> has used a 1.8m<\/strong> long spring (in terms of approach, it is not so different from what A<\/strong>.Lange & S\u00f6hne<\/strong> did on its Lange 31<\/strong><\/span><\/a>) that has thus allowed the brand to craft the hand-wound caliber with the highest power reserve on the market in the 5,000<\/strong>\u20ac average price range.<\/p>\n

Oris has developed various complications based on the 110.<\/h2>\n

Nobody ever thought the caliber 110<\/strong> would represent a stand-alone project aimed just\u00a0at equipping an anniversary collection of timepieces. It would have been an industrial suicide and total nonsense.<\/p>\n

\"ORIS-Artelier-Calibre-112\"Oris<\/strong> has developed the caliber 110<\/strong> further and unveiled new and original mechanical complications: the Artelier Calibre 111<\/strong> has, first and foremost, replaced the commemorative Limited Edition Calibre 110<\/strong> in the products\u2019 catalog (it adds a date window), whereas the Artelier Calibre 112<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has added a beautiful GMT function\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0the Artelier Calibre 113<\/span><\/a> <\/strong>has included a pointer<\/strong>\u2013date<\/strong> calendar, a clear nod to the Oris<\/strong>\u00a0Calibre 373<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is a perfect caliber for a Big Aviator Watch.<\/h2>\n

There are watches out there that are rooted in the history of aviation, whose modern re-editions are instead not as credible as the original one is. The caliber 110<\/strong>, on paper, would perfectly fit a Big Aviator Watch<\/strong>\u2018s case. Personally, I believe that Oris<\/strong> is, in this case, losing the chance to enter an exciting segment, at a relatively low development cost, but with the right package.<\/p>\n

The Artelier Calibre 111, 112 and 113 have an incredible market price<\/h2>\n

I honestly think Oris<\/strong> was not very smart in defining the price point of the various models from the Artelier<\/strong> collection because the asking price starts off at \u20ac5400<\/strong> for an Artelier Calibre 111<\/strong> up to \u20ac7600<\/strong> for an Artelier Calibre 112 in steel and gold<\/strong>. Don\u2019t get me wrong, the products\u2019 quality is unquestionable, but they belong to a market segment that\u2019s flooded with products whose technical specifications are not as refined as a 111<\/strong>\u2018s but whose brand\u2019s image is more consolidated. This choice, combined with a somehow missing promotional campaign, has in my opinion affected the sales performance, the result being you can easily find them at much less than their price tags. Currently, their market prices range between \u20ac3200<\/strong> and \u20ac4500<\/strong> that represents a lot of bang for your bucks.<\/p>\n
