Last year, in August<\/strong>, I was spending my holidays in Sardinia<\/strong> and I had a Longines Heritage Legend Diver<\/strong><\/a> wrapped around my wrist. It was\u00a0quite a strange choice considering that, during summer, I usually\u00a0wear diver\u2019s\u00a0watches with a rubber strap rather than a vintage diver\u2019s watch on a Milanese mesh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

All in all, it was a great experience because the \u201cFull Steel\u201d Legend Diver<\/strong> by Longines<\/strong> is a perfect everyday watch even if it\u2019s not,\u00a0in my personal opinion, the best choice when it comes to diving. It is no coincidence infact that the most popular version of the Legend Diver<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0actually sports a leather or a rubber strap.<\/p>\n

A Milanese mesh-like rubber strap<\/h2>\n

The Milanese<\/strong>\u2013mesh<\/strong> bracelet is back in fashion and the one\u00a0Longines<\/strong>\u00a0has designed, is nicely\u00a0done and gives the Legend Diver<\/strong>\u00a0a\u00a0premium\u00a0touch and feel. The Heritage Legend Diver<\/strong> is among the\u00a0Longines\u00a0Heritage collection<\/strong>\u2018s best-selling products (if not the best\u00a0selling one), thanks to a perfect combination of perfect re-issue, good technical specifications, nice size\u00a0and good price.<\/p>\n

\"longines-legend-diver-watch-pvd-5\"This year, Longines<\/strong> has launched a Full Black PVD <\/strong>coated Legend Diver<\/span><\/strong>, equipped with a rubber strap that mimics, on the outside, the same pattern of a\u00a0Milanese<\/strong> mesh.<\/p>\n

This option gives the Legend Diver<\/strong>\u2018s strap the appearance of a Milanese<\/strong> mesh, but makes it more comfortable to wear.<\/p>\n

\"longines-legend-diver-watch-pvd-6\"In doing so, the watch is also far more usable when swimming or diving and the PVD coating<\/strong> provides a scratch proofness to the case that the steel Legend Diver<\/strong> cannot actually guarantee.<\/p>\n

The Black PVD coated case<\/h2>\n

This is the key novelty introduced with the\u00a0Longines Legend Diver Black\u00a0PVD<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the brand from St.Imier has covered the case with a thin<\/strong> PVD<\/strong> layer<\/strong> to help protect it from scratches and accidental shocks as much as possible.<\/p>\n

While I had, at Baselworld 2018<\/strong>, the watch in my hands, I was wondering why the brand had not opted \u200b\u200bfor a DLC<\/strong> (Diamond Like Carbon) treatment, which is more refined than any\u00a0PVD treatment<\/strong> and more resistant to scratches too.<\/p>\n

\"longines-legend-diver-watch-pvd\"The answer to that question can be possibly found in the will to provide the case with a surface finish that is not too\u00a0rough, since the DLC<\/strong> treatment<\/strong> is so rough compared to the PVD<\/strong>\u2018s one, that it could have potentially \u201cdiluted\u201d the vintage feel of the watch, which is what has made a\u00a0Legend Diver<\/strong> so popular.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the PVD<\/strong> treatment perfectly matches, in terms of color and tone, the lacquered dial and the case back design.<\/p>\n

About the rubber strap<\/h2>\n

Again, it is not a PVD <\/strong>coated Milanese mesh<\/strong>, it would have otherwise not changed anything if we compare new and current watch\u00a0(I also assume that engineering\u00a0a\u00a0PVD <\/strong>coated Milanese mesh<\/strong> is extremely hard), but rather a rubber strap whose style replicates the pattern of a Milanese mesh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"longines-legend-diver-watch-pvd-4\"What I\u2019m not yet fully convinced of is the black-matte gray finish of the strap, since it\u00a0looks slightly different from the PVD case<\/strong>\u2018s finish and that\u00a0color difference clearly stands out. However, from a usability point of view, the goal of creating something new has been fully achieved.<\/p>\n

Big news: caliber L888 replaces caliber L633<\/h2>\n

The Longines Legend Diver Black PVD<\/strong> is equipped with the new caliber L888<\/strong>, that replaces the caliber L633<\/strong>. Engineers at ETA<\/strong> keep improving the efficiency of their movements and the end result is in this case a caliber capable of providing a 64<\/strong>\u2013hour<\/strong> Power Reserve<\/strong>, almost double the performance provided by caliber L633<\/strong> (38h<\/strong>), that is currently equipping all the\u00a0Legend Diver <\/strong>watches.<\/p>\n

\"longines-legend-diver-watch-pvd-2\"It is\u00a0a 68<\/strong>% increase<\/strong>, an incredible improvement over the current caliber and a result that Longines<\/strong> could have in my opinion communicated better, given that it makes a huge difference with the past.<\/p>\n

It is hard to guess when all the\u00a0Legend Diver<\/strong> watches will be equipped with the new caliber<\/strong>, but I\u2019m pretty sure that the phase-in\/phase-out process has already\u00a0started.<\/p>\n

\"longines-legend-diver-watch-pvd-1\"When did we talk about this caliber? More or less two years ago, when the\u00a0Longines Railroad 888<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0officially debuted the new movement\u00a0and I am sure that it will gradually equip the entire range of all the three-hands timepieces from the Heritage<\/strong> collection.<\/p>\n
