How do you create an item so timeless\u00a0that\u00a0can be showcased at the Moma<\/strong>\u00a0in New York<\/strong> and will still be appealing\u00a0fifty years later? It is not a trivial challenge, but rather one of the most difficult goals to achieve.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet every now and then someone succeeds:\u00a0any Apple<\/strong> product becomes a design object as soon as it has become technically obsolete and for the chaise longue by Le Corbusier<\/strong>, the Porsche<\/strong>\u00a0911<\/strong> or the famous lamp by Flos<\/strong> it seems as if time has stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are consumer goods (durable or not) that represent milestones and that remain in our collective\u00a0<\/span><\/span>memory by preserving a status of eternity and by resisting<\/span><\/span> passing fashion styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is especially important in the world of fine mechanical watchmaking of course: consider\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the long, patient and constant work of\u00a0German watch manufacturer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Nomos Glash\u00fctte<\/strong> focusing\u00a0on creating icons in the world of watchmaking since their inception.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The basic idea behind the the new NOMOS model Autobahn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The spirit that fueled the\u00a0Autobahn\u00a0neomatik 41 date<\/span><\/strong> from NOMOS Glash\u00fctte<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is similar to the one that gave life to NOMOS<\/strong> classics like <\/span><\/span> Z\u00fcrich<\/strong> and\u00a0Tangente<\/strong>, but with a substantial difference,\u00a0it is the first time that the brand has so clearly taken inspiration from a different sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world of automobiles<\/span><\/span> is omnipresent in the watch-making world and the interpretations carried out are many,\u00a0some manufacturers have chosen to link themselves to a specific car brand to find<\/span><\/span> inspiration for new collections;\u00a0others indirectly draw from the industry to give a sporty connotation to a specific watch, but without necessarily adding specific logos and instead creating new stories<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Nomos-glashuette-autobahn-neomatik-41-date-5\"<\/strong>NOMOS<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Glash\u00fctte<\/strong>\u00a0have always<\/span><\/span> blended their ideas with the Bauhaus<\/strong> philosophy, manifesting themselves as<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a unique brand of watchmaking\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in the eyes of the public and the critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, they have turned to another idea of design: <\/span><\/span>Werner Aissingler<\/strong>, the\u00a0respected<\/span><\/span>\u00a0designer of the new <\/span><\/span>NOMOS watch Autobahn<\/strong><\/span><\/span> and owner of my favorite Porsche<\/strong> car, the 928<\/strong>, took inspiration from the tachometers of cars manufactured between the 50s and the 70s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A glowing dial<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The direct reference to a tachometer can be seen in the eye-catching strip of\u00a0SuperLuminova<\/strong>\u00ae on the dial,\u00a0a circular ring that curiously reminds us of the rev counters of an Oldsmobile<\/strong> car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This intensely and uniformly glows in the dark in full contrast to the small counter of the continuous seconds located at six o\u2019clock and the end-tip of the minute\u00a0hand (which\u00a0is so thin that it looks like a central second-chrono hand).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Nomos-glashuette-autobahn-neomatik-41-date-7\"This effect is quite striking and unique when it comes to modern mechanical watches and two months ago our photographer was able to capture it at Baselworld<\/strong>. This is not the only unique trait of this timepiece, because the designer also created a curved<\/span><\/span> dial with a strong gradient<\/span><\/span> that starts from the end to then flatten in the middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is clearly visible on the version with the blue dial, or example,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>where the light is absorbed by the opaque blue color and then reflected near the glass \u2013 a perfectly flat sapphire glass coupled with an extremely thin bezel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Nomos-glashuette-autobahn-neomatik-41-date-6\"The case measures 41mm<\/strong>, because NOMOS<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Glash\u00fctte<\/strong> never exaggerate when it comes to the size of their watches and certainly won\u2019t <\/span><\/span>do it at a time when<\/span><\/span> the current trend sees diameters and thicknesses being constantly reduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main dial and the recessed sub-seconds dial give depth and breadth to the whole set, while enhancing the readability of the dial which is an essential design element of <\/span><\/span>\u00a0every\u00a0NOMOS Glash\u00fctte<\/strong> watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The in-house built DUW 6101 caliber<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before tackling the mechanics of the Autobahn neomatik 41\u00a0date<\/strong> we should focus for a moment on the case,\u00a0it is made of a single piece of steel (except for the screwed-in back), where the crown is not encased, but rather inserted at the end of a small protrusion towards the outside, on which the crown seems to \u201crest\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the anti-thesis of the built-in crown concept and yet another reference to the three-hands-timepieces from the 60s that, except for some specific sports watches, all feature a crown with no protectors rather than a screwed-in one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Nomos-glashuette-autobahn-neomatik-41-date\"The NOMOS<\/strong> logo with its enlarged M<\/strong> is engraved on the crown head. The brand\u2019s workshops only manufacture in-house built calibers \u2013 a sign of consistency with the motto \u201cMade in Germany\u201d that is printed on the dial, (-in the very same position, where you can usually see the words \u201cSwiss made\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also sign of pride and a tribute to the history of Saxon watchmaking as\u00a0Glash\u00fctte<\/strong> is a small town made up\u00a0of several traditional\u00a0<\/span><\/span>manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not including in-house built mechanics within this timepiece would have made the whole crafting hardly credible, as the brand has its roots in\u00a0170 years of watchmaking heritage of this<\/span><\/span>\u00a0small Saxon town, which incidentally<\/span><\/span>\u00a0also hosts one of the most important watch-making museums in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Nomos-glashuette-calibre-duw-6101\"The new\u00a0DUW 6101 caliber<\/strong> is a wide but thin caliber which is why the date window is positioned on the outer ring of the dial.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are more features that make this movement unique, such as the possibility of quickly adjusting the date in both directions\u00a0a function that shows the extreme care taken in the design phase of the NOMOS<\/strong>\u00a0calibers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important ingredient is<\/span><\/span> the escapement built in the brand\u2019s workshops since 2014<\/strong> which make NOMOS<\/strong>\u00a0a truly independent\u00a0<\/span><\/span>watch-making manufacturing company.\u00a0They call it the NOMOS<\/strong> swing system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From an aesthetic point of view, Autobahn <\/strong>is not only the most striking<\/span><\/span> watch ever created by NOMOS<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Glash\u00fctte<\/strong>, but it continues the company\u2019s special tradition of coming up with at least one technical innovation for the in-house built calibers when a completely<\/span><\/span>\u00a0new watch is released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The product also shows a meticulous attention to detail, a very light Nato strap with a wide and thin pin buckle that, thanks to the reduced thickness of the case, makes the Autobahn neomatik 41 date<\/strong> very comfortable to wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Nomos-glashuette-autobahn-neomatik-41-date-8\"It is clear that the brand\u2019s goal is the creation of timepieces that immediately catch\u00a0enthusiasts\u2019 attention.\u00a0A personal style, great wearability, high quality and useful technical features are characteristics that lead you to keep a watch for a long time and they are also the basis of the creation of a future classic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider that NOMOS<\/strong> positions\u00a0this watch below the \u20ac4,000<\/strong> threshold (the exact\u00a0retail price is \u20ac3,800<\/strong>), you will immediately understand why this timepiece can be considered as a fully credible product (depending on your taste).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
