On Saturday, 21st<\/sup> April, Blancpain<\/strong> hosted me at their Blancpain GT\u00a0Series<\/strong> at the Monza<\/strong> racing circuit \u2013 an event that has taken place for\u00a0several years, but that has seen Blancpain<\/strong> as the main sponsor only\u00a0since 2014. It was a really incredible day that allowed me to\u00a0understand both the quality of the Blancpain<\/strong> watches and how much\u00a0technology and passion this brand from Villeret<\/strong> puts in the management\u00a0of endurance races.<\/p>\n

Blancpain and the Motorsport world<\/h2>\n

Blancpain<\/strong>\u2018s link with the world of motor sport is very tight and, for\u00a0the past 10 years, it focused on GT cars. The competitions that bear\u00a0the Blancpain<\/strong> name are numerous, but only two of these competitions\u00a0take place during the Monza<\/strong> weekend \u2013 the Blancpain Endurance Series<\/strong>\u00a0and the Blancpain GT Sports Club<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-Hospitality-Lounge-Monza-2018-2\"The first was created in 2011<\/strong>\u00a0together with the SRO Motorsport Group<\/strong> and, today, is the\u00a0most-followed and most-recognized competition for GT<\/strong> cars in the\u00a0world, where three categories of drivers (Pro<\/strong>, Pro<\/strong>\u2013Am<\/strong> and Amateurs<\/strong>)\u00a0compete on different tracks across Europe for several hours; a real\u00a0show for the audience. The second competition, which has been bearing\u00a0the name of Blancpain<\/strong> since 2016<\/strong>, is a sprint championship reserved\u00a0for gentlemen drivers divided by age groups.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-GT-Series-Endurance-Cup-Monza-2018\"The \u201cfil rouge<\/em>\u201d that links the world of watch-making to that of\u00a0motoring is chronometry and this is a fundamental aspect for every\u00a0race. It is a tool that allows the race management to monitor the\u00a0race, decree winners and losers, make sure that the rules are abode by\u00a0and also guarantee the safety of all the competing drivers.\u00a0The various racing tracks only provide sensors placed along the track,\u00a0such as photocells for intermediate timing, but the whole system of\u00a0data acquisition and monitoring of the performance of the various\u00a0drivers is entirely managed by the manufacturing company. Eight\u00a0people work inside the chronometry room and six of them are\u00a0exclusively devoted to the acquisition and validation of times and the\u00a0updating of the graphics for the different television channels.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-GT-Series-Monza-2018\"The main devices used are the transponders<\/strong> with different selections\u00a0for each car given the need to change drivers during the race,\u00a0auxiliary cameras, such as those for photo-finish, and, as from this\u00a0year, a GPS system<\/strong> that allows you to monitor the speed, the\u00a0accelerations and the position of each car racing on the track.\u00a0The systems used can be compared to the technologies used by Rolex<\/strong> in\u00a0F1 races<\/strong>; actually they also monitor the changing of drivers during\u00a0the race. I was very impressed by the technology adopted and required\u00a0by this competition, but we must not forget that Blancpain<\/strong> belongs to\u00a0the Swatch Group<\/strong> which also includes Omega<\/strong> \u2013 a reference brand for\u00a0Olympic sports that has been the reference point for timing\u00a0disciplines like swimming for many years.<\/p>\n

My day<\/h2>\n

The day was really intense and dotted with interesting activities; on\u00a0top of things I was free to access all areas of the racing circuit,\u00a0including the exclusive VIP areas<\/strong>, from where you can see the finish\u00a0line and everything that happens in the pits, allowing me to fully\u00a0appreciate the movements of cars and various drivers from different\u00a0angles. It was a full immersion in the world of tourism cars.\u00a0The main activities were the visit to the chronometry room, the pit\u00a0stop at the Ferrari<\/strong>\u2013Kessel<\/strong> team and the lap along the racing track at\u00a0the end of the day on board a Lamborghini Hurac\u00e0n Performante<\/strong> driven\u00a0by an Academy<\/strong> driver.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-Hospitality-Lounge-Monza-2018-1\"The chronometry room is what contributes to the success of every race.\u00a0People are rarely given the chance to visit this room during the race\u00a0weekends, but Thierry<\/strong>, the person responsible for the whole system,\u00a0was very kind to welcome us and explain to us the main tasks performed\u00a0by the eight technicians working there and how much technology is\u00a0necessary to guarantee the quality standards required by this type of\u00a0race.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-L-Evolution-R-Chronographe-Flyback-a-Rattrapante-Grande-Date\"It was really a wonderful experience that allowed me to\u00a0understand how much know-how is necessary, how much responsibility and\u00a0what level of accuracy are required during a professional race. Now I\u00a0can understand perfectly well why the watch industry groups are so\u00a0interested in timing different sports disciplines, as they are a\u00a0fertile territory to develop their technology!<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-GT-Series-Endurance-Cup-Winners-Monza-2018\"Visiting the pits and seeing the mechanics working on cars was an\u00a0incredible experience \u2013 pressure levels to the top and no error\u00a0permitted, maximum efficiency is the main characteristic of every\u00a0technician working inside the pit during a professional race.\u00a0As you could guess, the most adrenaline-filled and exciting part was\u00a0the ride along the track. I had never been on-board a super car that\u00a0gets squeezed up to its last power horse and it was a really beautiful\u00a0experience.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-GT-Series-Winning-Car-Audi-Club-Team-WRT-Monza-2018\"The lateral accelerations make you jump off your seat and\u00a0driving along the full parabolic bend gives you an exceptional\u00a0adrenaline rush. The driver steered the wheel by half-inches to keep\u00a0the\u00a0car on the ideal path; great skills are needed to tame cars with\u00a0over 600HP<\/strong>. I already consider the driver that took me for a ride a\u00a0hero,\u00a0and he wasn\u2019t even expressing his potential at 100%, so what\u00a0could we consider F1 drivers<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

What about the watches?<\/h2>\n

\"Blancpain-Fifty-Fathoms-Watches-Hospitality-Lounge-2018\"Roberto Castagna<\/strong>, Blancpain<\/strong>\u2019s brand manager for Italy<\/strong>, allowed me to\u00a0try on three watches \u2013 two chronographs of the L<\/strong>\u2013Evolution<\/strong> series and\u00a0the glorious\u00a0Fifty Fathoms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Blancpain L-Evolution R Chronographe Flyback Grande Date and the\u00a0Blancpain\u00a0L-Evolution-R Chronographe Flyback a\u00a0Rattrapante Grande Date<\/h2>\n

These are two chronographs with Flyback<\/strong> function and big date; the\u00a0second is even a rattrapante. The first features a titanium and steel<\/strong>\u00a0case with carbon fiber inserts and dial<\/strong>, while the second sports a white\u00a0gold case<\/strong> and a carbon fiber bezel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-L-Evolution-R-Chronographe-Flyback-a-Rattrapante-Grande-Date-front\"They are really wonderful and\u00a0well-crafted\u00a0\u2013 a very accurate making, an extremely precise feed of\u00a0the chrono buttons and a perfect processing of carbon with fibers\u00a0arranged at 90\u00b0\u00a0are among the beautiful feelings that I collected. I\u00a0would say that these are the perfect watches to wear on occasions like\u00a0the Blancpain\u00a0GT Series<\/strong>, where details, especially made of carbon, can\u00a0really make the difference.<\/p>\n

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms<\/h2>\n

It is the flagship model of the brand as well as its most famous, it\u00a0is a diver\u2019s watch and, for years, there have been disputes about who\u00a0came first between it and the Rolex Submariner<\/strong>. It is a truly\u00a0wonderful timepiece, with a great crafting quality that can be felt\u00a0immediately.\u00a0Here is an interesting detail that Roberto<\/strong> pointed out to\u00a0me \u2013 originally, watch glasses were made of plastic and were slightly\u00a0convex, if\u00a0you tilted the watch and looked through the convexity, you\u00a0could not see the dial on the bottom.<\/p>\n

\"blancpain-fifty-fathoms\"To recreate this \u201cvintage<\/em>\u201d\u00a0effect using a\u00a0sapphire crystal (which, unlike plastic, cannot be\u00a0convex, because of its different structure), a whole slab of thicker\u00a0sapphire glass is\u00a0processed and then placed on top of the case. The\u00a0attention to detail is really high and the results obtained are\u00a0excellent, I was really\u00a0impressed by the Fifty Fathoms<\/strong> that most of\u00a0you will either know already or even own, but, for me, it was the\u00a0first time that I had seen it with my very own eyes.<\/p>\n

Final conclusions<\/h2>\n

The Blancpain GT Series<\/strong> is a really well-made event that is suitable\u00a0for both motor enthusiasts and their families. The atmosphere that you\u00a0can feel in the paddock is genuine and you can easily meet mechanics\u00a0and professionals who are ready to tell you about their\u00a0experience and\u00a0passion for the world of Motorsport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Blancpain-Hospitality-Lounge-Monza-2018\"It was a really exciting\u00a0experience that allowed me to understand the quality of the work and\u00a0the technology existing within the Blancpain<\/strong> brand, both in terms of\u00a0watches and time-keeping.
