{"id":26132,"date":"2021-03-27T18:39:04","date_gmt":"2021-03-27T18:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/the-panerai-radiomir-3-days-acciaio-pam-685-and-pam-687\/"},"modified":"2023-07-09T11:10:36","modified_gmt":"2023-07-09T09:10:36","slug":"panerai-radiomir-3-days-acciaio-pam-685-pam-687-hands-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/panerai-radiomir-3-days-acciaio-pam-685-pam-687-hands-on\/","title":{"rendered":"The Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio PAM 685 and PAM 687 watches hands-on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year, <strong>Panerai<\/strong> takes part in the <strong>SIHH<\/strong> by presenting a model inspired to its historic military roots, and it relaunches a timepiece that was originally crafted as a prototype at the end of the 30s exclusively for the <strong>Italian Navy<\/strong> front line soldiers; the <strong>Radiomir<\/strong> <strong>3646 Type A<\/strong>.\u00a0One of the peculiarities of the <strong>Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio PAM 685 and PAM 687<\/strong> is the writing \u201c<strong>OFFICINE PANERAI BREVETTATO<\/strong>\u201d (\u201c<strong>PATENTED PANERAI WORKSHOPS<\/strong>\u201d) that appears on the dodecagonal bezel, it is almost an anticipation of the \u201c<strong>OFFICINE PANERAI<\/strong>\u201d (\u201c<strong>PANERAI WORKSHOPS<\/strong>\u201d) logo that was created in <strong>1972<\/strong> after Guido (or Giuseppe) Panerai passed away and when engineer Dino Zei joined the manufacturing company. The writing \u201c<strong>BREVETTO<\/strong>\u201d (\u201c<strong>PATENT<\/strong>\u201d) \u2013 patent number <strong>333991<\/strong> dated 4<sup>th<\/sup> April 1935 \u2013 refers to the technique used to create the glowing effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_685_e_PAM_687\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_685_e_PAM_687.jpg\" alt=\"Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio PAM 685 PAM 687\">The name of the\u00a0<strong>Radiomir<\/strong> derives from a material made up of <strong>bromide<\/strong> and <strong>radium<\/strong>, <strong>zinc<\/strong> <strong>sulphide<\/strong>, and <strong>mesothorium<\/strong> that was called \u201c<em>radiomir<\/em>\u201d. This material had very high self-glowing properties that fell onto the \u201c<strong>sandwich<\/strong>\u201d dial. With the passing of years, the <strong>Radiomir<\/strong> material was replaced by the <strong>Luminor<\/strong> material, which contained <strong>tritium<\/strong> and was less radioactive.\u00a0The model has been relaunched with a classic <strong>black military dial<\/strong>, like its predecessor, or in a <strong>nuanced brown <\/strong>version that brings back the effect of the gamma radiations emitted by the \u201c<em>radiomir<\/em>\u201d on the dial with the passing of time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_687_due\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_687_due.jpg\" alt=\"Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio PAM 687 due\">The cushion-shaped\u00a0case measures <strong>47mm<\/strong> and is waterproof up to <strong>3 atmospheres<\/strong>, it features a bezel with thread lugs that are no longer welded like they were on the former model but that are actually screwed-in and are, therefore, more practical and reliable. Other features are as follows: a <strong>brown<\/strong> <strong>strap<\/strong> with ecru stitches, a large stainless-steel buckle, a bezel with a plexiglass crystal, and a screwed-in case-back with a sapphire glass in a dodecagonal shape with engraved and mirror writings that are accentuated by the flat glass, through which we can view the <strong>in-house built P3000 calibre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_687_calibre_P3000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_687_calibre_P3000.jpg\" alt=\"Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio PAM 687 calibre P3000\">This calibre takes inspiration from the movements from the past, not only with regards to its size but with regards to the design of the bridges also; there is no functionality-related reason behind this design, compared to the original <strong>P3000<\/strong>, as the manufacturer confirmed last year already but it is rather an aesthetic upgrade (please see the articles on the <strong>PAM424<\/strong>). The calibre sports a modern crafting, it features two large bridges, its diameter measures <strong>16 \u00bd lines<\/strong> and its <strong>thickness<\/strong> measures <strong>5.3mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two wheel barrels are hosted inside this calibre and they are connected in series so as to better redistribute the energy around and guarantee up to <strong>72 hours of power reserve<\/strong>, there is also a big balance wheel measuring <strong>13.22mm<\/strong> with four screws with an external adjusting unit and a bridge that is anchored to two points, thus making the whole system sturdier. A star wheel with <strong>12<\/strong> <strong>pins<\/strong> and a small spring clutch allow the user to adjust the hours hand by clicks independently from the minutes hand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Panerai_Radiomir_3_Days_Acciaio_PAM_685.jpg\" alt=\"Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio PAM 685\">The <strong>Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio PAM 685 and\u00a0PAM 687<\/strong> come\u00a0in a pear-tree-wood-case that also contains a replacement plexiglass crystal, the serial certificate of the limited edition and a publication of the <strong>Italian Royal Navy<\/strong> equipment, where one can find <strong>Panerai<\/strong> timepieces and instruments.\u00a0I find this vintage edition quite beautiful and one can witness <strong>Panerai<\/strong>\u2018s continuous effort to bring back its historic reference and meet more and more the taste of the brand\u2019s collectors mainly in the \u201c<em>veered<\/em>\u201d dial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a pity that the waterproofness reaches the 3 atmospheres only; it is a bit limited if you consider that other timepieces with similar characteristics, like the <strong>PAM424<\/strong> or <strong>PAM672 <\/strong>for example, reach the <strong>10 atmospheres<\/strong>.
