The last time we talked about an A<\/strong>.Lange & S\u00f6hne<\/strong> was at SIHH 2018<\/strong> and the timepiece was the 2018<\/strong>\u00a0Triple Split<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, a complicated yet unique timepiece. Today we will talk about one of the brand\u2019s super-complicated watches, a timepiece\u00a0that is the living testimony of what the manufacturer from Glash\u00fctte<\/strong> can come up with; the A.Lange & S\u00f6hne<\/strong>\u00a0Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar White Gold<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"a-lange-soehne-lange-1-tourbillon-perpetual-calendar-7\"There is a hint of emotion and admiration transpiring when I get to put together two terms like \u201cTourbillon<\/em>\u201d and \u201cPerpetual Calendar<\/em>\u201d; two complications that, when integrated within the same caliber, are extremely fascinating, and that immediately turn our attention to the very few brands who are capable of crafting them.<\/p>\n

\"a-lange-soehne-lange-1-tourbillon-perpetual-calendar-1\"The A.Lange & S\u00f6hne\u00a0Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar<\/strong> is one of the manufacturer\u2019s pillars, that is to say that the reference 720.032<\/strong> that features a pink<\/strong>\u2013gold<\/strong> case and a silver<\/strong> dial<\/strong> is one of the brand\u2019s trademarks, and\u00a0the manufacturer released two years ago a new white<\/strong>\u2013gold<\/strong> and gray dial<\/strong> version. The search for minimalism, that is evident if you take a look at an A<\/strong>.Lange & S\u00f6hne Saxonia Moon Phase<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>or an\u00a0A<\/strong>.Lange & S\u00f6hne 1815\u00a0Annual\u00a0Calendar<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0is confirmed once again with this super-complicated timepiece.<\/p>\n

All the information are perfectly displayed<\/h2>\n

As per the brand\u2019s usual standards, all the information available on the dial is laid out in a logic and tidy manner; the off<\/strong>\u2013centered<\/strong> time<\/strong> display<\/strong>, the moon<\/strong>\u2013phase<\/strong>\u2013display<\/strong> inserted at 7 o-clock<\/strong> within the continuous seconds<\/strong> dial, the leap<\/strong>\u2013year<\/strong>\u2013indicator<\/strong> located inside a tiny rectangular window<\/strong> at 6 o\u2019clock, and the counter of the retrograde days<\/strong> placed at 10 o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n

\"a-lange-soehne-lange-1-tourbillon-perpetual-calendar-6\"All these features are 100% A.Lange & S\u00f6hne<\/strong> while the decision to separate out of all the watch\u2019s functions is the proof of an out-of-the-ordinary technical challenge.<\/p>\n

A super-clean, yet rich, dial<\/h2>\n

The missing digital viewing mode of the month, we might have expected given that this is a Perpetual Calendar<\/strong>, is a choice that goes against current trends for those who have made a trademark out of this philosophy (Zeitwerk<\/strong>) and it clearly shows how the brand has willingly decided to preserve the formal purity of the original Lange 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"AA.Lange & S\u00f6hne<\/strong> has built a ring located at the edge of the dial that lists the names of the twelve months, the ring moves automatically by 30 degrees each end of month and it makes the dial completely flat, the only real opening window being then represented by the outsized date<\/strong>. The one<\/strong>\u2013minute<\/strong>\u2013tourbillon<\/strong> is not facing the same side as the dial but it is partially visible through the see<\/strong>\u2013through<\/strong>\u2013case<\/strong>\u2013back<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0A.Lange & S\u00f6hne caliber L082.1<\/h2>\n

The mechanic movement is, as known, able to stick to the calendar up to 2100<\/strong> when the leap<\/strong>\u2013year<\/strong>\u2013cycle<\/strong> that usually changes every 4 years<\/strong> will fail \u2013 there will be no February 29<\/strong> \u2013 so that the user will have to manually adjust the movement.<\/p>\n

\"a-lange-soehne-lange-1-tourbillon-perpetual-calendar-2\"As I said before, the only real big opening window on the dial is the outsized date window<\/strong>, a feature that\u00a0the manufacturer\u00a0can\u2019t do without and quite a technically-complicated function to craft too due to the size of the two digits if compared to the size of a so-called \u201ctraditional<\/em>\u201d date display \u2013 the size of each of the digital digits is about 3 times that of the traditional digits -.\u00a0The two discs<\/strong> (the disc listing the tens<\/strong> and the disc listing the decimals<\/strong>) are separated from each other by a tiny 0,15mm<\/strong>\u2013gap<\/strong>, a size that abides by the typical precision standards of Germanic watch-making.<\/p>\n

An additional technical complication<\/h2>\n

The option to display the twelve months of the year on an outer ring gives an additional \u201ccomplication factor<\/em>\u201d to an already naturally-complicated type of architecture. The mechanism requires therefore a re-coding of the information available; the ring<\/strong> sports twelve hollows<\/strong> with different depths on the lower part. A deeper<\/strong> hollow<\/strong> implies a shorter month <\/strong>and thus a more rapid movement to the next month, every month, a lever scans these hollows and, during the month of February<\/strong>, it also scans a cam disc located under the leap-year-indicator. When the lever hits a radius that is bigger<\/strong> than the disc<\/strong> itself, it means that the movement is due after 29 days<\/strong>, when the lever hits a smaller<\/strong> radius, it moves to the month of March<\/strong> at the end of the 28<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> day.<\/p>\n

\"AThe one<\/strong>\u2013minute<\/strong>\u2013tourbillon<\/strong> can be stopped, putting then together the stop<\/strong>\u2013seconds<\/strong> function<\/strong> and the function that regulates the movement precision with the elaborated algorithm at the base of the perpetual calendar. If compared to a traditional perpetual calendar, there are two additional functions<\/strong>; the patented function for the viewing of the months<\/strong> and that of the outsized date<\/strong>. Such a type of architecture requires a lot of energy to work properly.\u00a0The energy is supplied through a\u00a0rotor<\/strong> whose central part<\/strong> is made of gold<\/strong> while the external ring<\/strong> is made of platinum<\/strong>, in the middle lies an inset<\/strong> diamond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"a-lange-soehne-lange-1-tourbillon-perpetual-calendar-5\"The caliber L082.1<\/strong> is made up of 624 components<\/strong> and it guarantees over 50 hours of power reserve<\/strong>, the balance wheel<\/strong> runs at a frequency of 21,600 oscillations per hour<\/strong>. The thickness of the caliber<\/strong> measures 7,8mm<\/strong>, the thickness of the case<\/strong> measures 12,2mm<\/strong> while the case<\/strong>\u00a0diameter<\/strong>\u00a0measures 41,9mm<\/strong> (this is German precision measured up to the very last tenth of millimeter!).<\/p>\n

Price and personal thoughts<\/h2>\n

The price is you need to pay to get your hands on a A.Lange & S\u00f6hne\u00a0Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar<\/strong> is 315,900<\/strong> euro<\/strong>, a retail price that is on par with the average retail price of a Minute\u00a0Repeater<\/em> timepiece for example.<\/p>\n

\"a-lange-soehne-lange-1-tourbillon-perpetual-calendar-4\"I do not mean the retail price is too high;\u00a0when it comes to combining together a Tourbillon<\/strong> and a Perpetual Calendar,<\/strong> the caliber has been entirely designed and crafted in-house and features very original technical solutions, the logic behind retail prices loses its meaning and the positioning can therefore be, using the lingo of mathematicians, \u201cas high as you like it<\/em> \u201c. The main strength of the A.Lange & S\u00f6hne\u00a0Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar<\/strong> lies in the coherence of the Lange<\/strong> 1<\/strong> collection, formally speaking, this timepiece is not too different from a Lange 1 Timezone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"a-lange-soehne-lange-1-tourbillon-perpetual-calendar-3\"The Tourbillon<\/strong> seems to be\u00a0actually an instrument used to enhance precision \u2013 the real reason why it was invented in the first place \u2013 rather than a show-off. That means that whoever opts for this timepiece is in love with the most refined horlogerie, he is someone who doesn\u2019t go for anything trivial and is well capable of appreciating the enormous technical effort that A.Lange & S\u00f6hne<\/strong>\u00a0has made to craft a Tourbillon<\/strong> with a Perpetual<\/strong> Calendar<\/strong> that sticks strictly to the Saxon<\/strong> school\u2019s philosophy: the will to be different from everybody else.<\/p>\n
