If you follow the world of horlogerie, it is your moral duty to remind all its aficionados at least twice per year, right before the opening of the two most important fairs, what Saxon watch-making is all about so that the two brands that make the small city of Glash\u00fctte<\/strong> an extremely interesting place can be properly honored.<\/p>\n

The exchange of knowledge and skills that took place between the big masters of watch-making from the end of the 18th <\/sup>century to the beginning of the 19th<\/sup> century, created\u00a0the two watch-making giants \u2013 content-wise rather than size-wise \u2013 that were funded and developed in this little city located at the Swiss border. One of these two companies is Glash\u00fctte Original<\/strong><\/span>, one of the premium pillars of the Swatch<\/strong> Group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"GlashutteThe common marketing meaning of the term \u201csegmentation<\/em>\u201d doesn\u2019t apply to the world of Saxon<\/strong> horlogerie. This type of watch-making occupies the top position in the sector and it boasts a unique characteristic; its constant search for minimalism is some sort of ostentation, and it is almost something to be proud of.<\/p>\n

The Glash\u00fctte Original Senator Chronometer<\/strong> is not the most complicated Glash\u00fctte<\/strong>\u00a0Original<\/strong> timepiece, in order to find that, you need to go up a few levels, where you will find the Grande Cosmopolite Tourbillon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, while I am composing this article, this timepiece is the most complex and interesting Glash\u00fctte Original<\/strong> that has ever graced Horbiter<\/strong>\u00ae\u2019s pages and one of the brand\u2019s pivotal collections. In the last 15 years, Glash\u00fctte Original<\/strong> has progressively given up its production of aviator\u2019s and sport watches by focusing on the development of calibers instead, these are getting more and more complicated with their rich but austere style.<\/p>\n

The final result of this effort is the creation of a well-formed aesthetic identity<\/strong> and technique. The Glash\u00fctte Original Senator Chronometer<\/strong> is the perfect witness of this change. The term \u201cChronometer<\/em>\u201d is generally overused or used incorrectly, it is supposed to identify a phase in the history of watch-making when precision was some sort of an obsession and chronometers were navigation instruments that you couldn\u2019t do without.<\/p>\n

\"GlashutteThe Glash\u00fctte Original Senator Chronometer<\/strong> collection isn\u2019t a novelty in the Senator<\/strong> family but the white gold<\/strong> version with a blue dial<\/strong> is. It is a milestone because it represents the first timepiece that Glash\u00fctte Original <\/strong>certified as a chronometer<\/strong> in accordance with the requirements established by two independent German<\/strong> bodies and the political vision \u2013 shared by many other brands \u2013 that shifts the concept of manufacturing from crafting parts to the more complicated concept of company philosophy.<\/p>\n

This is also a manner to stress the quality of a timepiece that is fully compliant with the historic meaning of the term \u201cChronometer<\/em>\u201d, a manner that is definitely more reliable than the COSC<\/strong> ranking and that, at the same time, underlines the all<\/strong>\u2013German<\/strong>\u2013pedigree<\/strong> of the Senator<\/strong> Chronometer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"GlashutteThe use of the blue color<\/strong> is something the brand is familiar with, and, lately, it is also a trendy hue that many manufacturers opt for and interpret differently; there are those manufacturers that use a vivid blue hue<\/strong> to give a touch of personality to a somewhat too sober collection and those manufacturers, like Glash\u00fctte Original<\/strong>, that prefer a lighter<\/strong> and matted<\/strong> shade of blue<\/strong> that can show everybody what the brand is able to do with its own dials. This particular shade of color is crafted in the workshops of Pforzheim<\/strong> and is the result of a long process that requires the lacquer<\/strong> to be first applied<\/strong> and then dried<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"GlashutteThe Roman indices and the \u201cChemin de fer<\/em>\u201d minute ring are engraved on the dial and then treated with a silver galvanizing process<\/strong>. The final result is an exceptionally deep dial<\/strong>, a dial whose depth is accentuated by the presence of two big counters<\/strong>, the running seconds counter<\/strong> located at 6 o\u2019clock \u2013 an aesthetic homage to the architecture of the big navy chronometers that feature an extremely thin hand \u2013 and the power reserve counter<\/strong> located at 12 o\u2019clock. Both counters are recessed.<\/p>\n

The sober matted fine grained finishing is interrupted by white<\/strong> gold<\/strong>\u2013made<\/strong> pear<\/strong>\u2013shaped<\/strong> hands. The small opening that you can spot on the base is the day<\/strong>\/night<\/strong> indicator<\/strong>, within this is a rotating disc crafted in two colors only; black<\/strong> and white<\/strong> that represent the night<\/strong>\u2013time<\/strong> and the day<\/strong>\u2013time<\/strong> respectively. Another trademark of a Glash\u00fctte Original<\/strong>\u00a0is its big date window, also called the \u201cPanorama Date<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"GlashutteThe best tribute to the history of the Chronometer<\/strong> is the 58<\/strong>\u201301<\/strong> caliber. The caliber is 35mm<\/strong> wide and is hosted within a white gold case that measures 42mm<\/strong>, the height is 6,5mm<\/strong> and it reminds us of a big caliber hosted within a pocket watch \u2013 despite its 4Hz<\/strong> running frequency -. The power reserve<\/strong> totals 44 hours and 40 minutes<\/strong> and this is the first time that I have come across such a precise and detailed figure.<\/p>\n

The design is almost monolithic thanks to the \u00be plate<\/strong>, Glash\u00fctte Original<\/strong>\u00a0has decided to leave the\u00a0hand<\/strong>\u2013engraved<\/strong> balance<\/strong> cock<\/strong> on full view, where a swan<\/strong>\u2013neck<\/strong>\u00a0fine\u00a0regulating device has been mounted. Every other part that is not on full display has been fully finished. The caliber<\/strong> boasts a refined seconds stop system<\/strong>; when you pull the winding crown, the seconds hand moves to the beginning position while the minutes hands moves to the index of the next full minute.<\/p>\n

When the crown is turned to set the time, the minutes hand is locked in the full minute position while the seconds counter is locked in the beginning position so that you can synchronize the hourly time.<\/p>\n

\"GlashutteIt is unbelievable how much Glash\u00fctte Original<\/strong> has grown both as a brand and as a manufacturer. Its positioning is one of the most coherent and believable in the haute-horlogerie industry, it is based on contents that no watch expert will ever be able to deny both from the point of view of technical choices and style, an extremely sophisticated style that can satisfy even the most demanding expert. The brand is the real example of the so-called German school<\/strong>, the only true alternative to Swiss<\/strong> haute<\/strong>\u2013horlogerie<\/strong> and, from a certain perspective, even a winning competitor.<\/p>\n

The ensemble of the case<\/strong>, the dial<\/strong> and the movement<\/strong> represents an enviable aesthetic balance<\/strong> and the Glash\u00fctte Original Senator Chronometer<\/strong> with its blue dial<\/strong> stands out even among the different collections of the brand. If, after reading this article, you start thinking about a possible \u201cinvestment<\/em>\u201d focusing on this timepiece\u2019s value, you are heading towards the wrong direction and that\u2019s not because a Senator Chronometer <\/strong>isn\u2019t able to acquire any additional value with the passing of time and reach a value that goes beyond a 27,200 euro<\/strong> retail price but simply because this is the type of timepiece that you buy to enjoy for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n
