When it comes to independent watch-making and the so-called \u201cde<\/em>\u2013structured<\/em>\u201d time display, no other brand can boast such a strong and unconventional image like Urwerk<\/strong><\/span>. Design doesn\u2019t drive technique but it is actually a result of it and considering Urwerk<\/strong> as the first manufacturer that has truly revolutionized traditional watch-making is not an overstatement at all.<\/p>\n

When it comes to traditional or classic watchmaking,\u00a0proportions, quotas, distances between parts live\u00a0together in such a well-balanced state that it is as if you should not touch it at all.\u00a0This is what I define\u00a0as \u201cthe millimeter law<\/em>\u201d but when it comes to Urwerk<\/strong> this law loses its meaning altogether.<\/p>\n

\"UrwerkThe Urwerk UR-105 TA Clockwork Orange<\/strong> is an operation that ties together a new aesthetic variation of the UR<\/strong>\u2013105<\/strong> and Stanley Kubrick<\/strong>\u2019s masterpiece from the 70s. In a different manner, I can say that both the timepiece and the movie are quite far from normal parameters and the UR<\/strong>\u2013105<\/strong> can be considered as the basis or the entry door to the Urwerk<\/strong> world, a world that hasn\u2019t been built on tourbillons<\/strong> or minutes repeaters<\/strong>\u00a0but rather on a special time display that is based on a system made up in this case of four satellites<\/strong> that rotate around the axis of a central wheel and on their very own axis also, while the minutes scale seems to be more traditional and is located on the lower basis of the case.<\/p>\n

\"UrwerkThis is mainly a digital time display and it is the right way forward to reach a \u201cde<\/em>\u2013structured<\/em> hours<\/em>\u201d concept, it is nevertheless a very intuitive method for the human mind that is more used to reading numbers<\/strong> rather than interpreting indirect pieces of information<\/strong>. This was one of the considerations that lies in my opinion at the basis of the concept of time according to Urwerk<\/strong>.\u00a0From a merely conceptual point of view and without trying to simplify or diminish the base idea of this project, the karussell with the four satellites is not too dissimilar to the movement of a circular carousel.<\/p>\n

\"UrwerkBefore taking a deeper look at the technicalities of a Urwerk UR<\/strong>\u2013105 TA Clockwork Orange<\/strong>, let me please give you my personal view on the aesthetics of this timepiece; it looks like a miniature space ship<\/strong> and the two turbines<\/strong> located on the case-back with their specific technical function, look like two thrusters<\/strong>. It seems like my fantasy is running wild but\u2026<\/p>\n

\"Urwerk\u2026there is so much source of inspiration here.\u00a0 If I were asked to associate this watch with something more familiar, I would say that it reminds me of a \u201cBull<\/em>\u2013Head<\/em>\u201d chrono due to the elongated shape of the case<\/strong> and the presence of a crown at 12 o\u2019clock<\/strong>. I will leave it to you and your sensations to decide what this timepiece reminds you of as it is now time I talk\u00a0a bit about the type of technology that Martin<\/strong> and F\u00e9lix<\/strong> have used on the UR<\/strong>\u2013105<\/strong> family.<\/p>\n

\"UrwerkTo craft its watches, Urwerk<\/strong> makes quite a heavy use of light materials that are commonly utilized in other sectors like chemical engineering or aeronautic engineering. The satellites are made of forged aluminum<\/strong> and the coating is made of PEEK<\/strong>, an acronym that stands for \u201cPolyEtherEtherketone<\/em>\u201d\u00a0-.<\/p>\n

\"UrwerkThe karussell on which the four satellites have been mounted is made of ARCAP<\/strong> treated with ruthenium<\/strong> that has then been micro bead<\/strong>\u2013blasted<\/strong>. The case is made of titanium<\/strong> and is coupled with a stainless steel<\/strong>\u2013made<\/strong> bezel<\/strong> that has undergone a PVD<\/strong> treatment. The UR<\/strong> 5.02 caliber<\/strong> is quite interesting but neither because of its 48 hours of power reserve<\/strong> nor for its 4Hz running frequency<\/strong> but rather because it is adjustable, a characteristic of Urwerk<\/strong> timepieces. If you move the small lever located on the case-back, you can actually adjust the power reserve by applying a \u201cbrake\u201d to the turbines that can halt<\/strong>, slow<\/strong> or maximize<\/strong> the barrel<\/strong>\u2019s recharge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"UrwerkOwning a Urwerk UR<\/strong>\u2013105 TA Clockwork Orange<\/strong> is not a second choice but rather an unconventional decision that involves liking both the style and the concept of this timepiece, these two features, however, are not enough to justify a purchase of 60,000<\/strong> euro.<\/p>\n

The design effort that has led to the translation of this idea into reality is humongous and it is wrong to think that a UR<\/strong>\u2013105<\/strong> is somehow in direct contrast with or even an alternative to tradition since all the non \u2013 visible parts of the movement display a finishing that is coherent with tradition itself \u2013 like, for instance, those\u00a0surfaces that sport a Perlage<\/em> decoration \u2013 . It is simply a different vision.<\/p>\n

\"UrwerkThis timepiece is rather a school of thought, the bridge<\/strong> that links together the tradition<\/strong> and the forefront of Swiss watch<\/strong>\u2013making<\/strong>, a concept that is summarized in an item that measures 39,5mm<\/strong> x 53mm<\/strong> x 16.8mm<\/strong>, it is extremely light, comfortable to wear and full of technology, where the concept of client customization<\/strong> moves from the easily<\/strong>\u2013attainable<\/strong> aesthetic<\/strong> side to the more challenging and more interesting mechanic side<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
