{"id":26088,"date":"2021-03-22T07:19:34","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T07:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/rado-hyperchrome-1616-vintage-rados-are-back\/"},"modified":"2021-11-26T15:04:56","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T15:04:56","slug":"rado-hyperchrome-1616-hands-on-photo-price","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/rado-hyperchrome-1616-hands-on-photo-price\/","title":{"rendered":"Rado HyperChrome 1616; vintage Rados are back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify\">It was <strong>1616<\/strong> when two Dutch explorers, <strong>Willem Schouten<\/strong> and <strong>Jacob Le Maire<\/strong>, discovered <strong>Cape Horn<\/strong> and it was in the 60s\/70s when <strong>Rado<\/strong> paid its tribute to that discovery with the release of its laconically-named <strong>Rado Cape Horn<\/strong>. The <strong>Cape Horn<\/strong> timepiece was crafted in different versions, among which is the <strong>Rado Cape Horn 1000<\/strong> that sported both the day and the date displayed inside two big overlapping windows that were located in a vertical position at 6 o\u2019clock, applied big indexes built in a triangular shape and a thin crown that was partially hidden within the case. Four hundred years later, <strong>Rado<\/strong> decided to celebrate again this discovery with the launch of a modern version of the <strong>Cape Horn<\/strong> called <strong>Rado Hyperchrome 1616<\/strong>, an homage to the geometric and highly-squared style of the 70s, an hyperbolic vintage model among collections that are more and more projected into the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rado Cape Horn original\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Rado_Cape_Horn_original.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" title=\"Rado_Cape_Horn_original\">The original case of the <strong>Cape Horn<\/strong>\u00a0in this version measured <strong>38mm<\/strong>, the case of the <strong>Rado Hyperchrome 1616<\/strong> has grown significantly in size to then reach the <strong>46mm<\/strong>-threshold in width, <strong>45.5mm<\/strong> in height and <strong>13.7<\/strong> in thickness. These sizes, together with the squared shape of the case and the thickness of the domed sapphire glass, make this watch quite imposing when compared to a similar round shape, on top of everything, the crown-protection-system makes it look even bigger. <strong>Rado<\/strong> has often \u201cbaffled\u201d us with odd shapes, from the extremely-thin and minimal shape of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/rado-hyperchrome-ultra-light-limited-edition-2018-watches-hands-on-horbiter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><strong>Rado Ultra<\/strong>\u2013<strong>Light<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to the more elaborated shape of the <strong>R<\/strong>\u2013<strong>One<\/strong>, the manufacturer has played with <strong>titanium<\/strong> to reach a superior anti-scratching-resistance resulting in\u00a0a surface hardness of up to <strong>1,000 Vickers<\/strong>. This is one of the very few cases <strong>Rado<\/strong> has used titanium to craft a timepiece\u2019s case and it is the first time in the world of watch-making that titanium is both so light and hard on the surface, a characteristic that <strong>Rado<\/strong> can\u2019t do without (another example is the\u00a0<strong>Citizen<\/strong> <strong>Super<\/strong>\u2013<strong>Titanium<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rado HyperChrome 1616 cinque\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/ITA_PR_Rado_HyperChrome_1616_cinque.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" title=\"Rado_HyperChrome_1616_cinque\">The final result is an imposing timepiece whose polishing is similar to that of a <strong>Hardmetal<\/strong>-cased watch but half as heavy. It is a pity that <strong>Rado<\/strong> decided not to dare a bit more and add an extra version that includes a bracelet with links, a very popular choice in the 70s that <strong>Rado<\/strong> totally owned thanks to a meshed bracelet design that was extremely original and links that maintained their original shape even after being used non-stop for 20 years. The <strong>Rado Hyperchrome 1616<\/strong> is equipped with an aged-leather strap that is brown in colour, an extensible deployant clasp that has been treated on the surface using the same technique as the one used on the case. The <strong>dirty<\/strong>\u2013<strong>white<\/strong> dial and the applied indexes crafted in a golden colour complete <strong>Rado<\/strong>\u2019s \u201c<em>vintage re<\/em>\u2013<em>issue<\/em>\u201d operation that also includes the rotating anchor, a clear reference to watches like my <strong>Captain Cook<\/strong>. This is possibly the most extreme transformation that the brand from <strong>Lengnau<\/strong> has ever carried out in the last few years. The most obvious reference to the modern world is the automatic caliber that guarantees up to <strong>80 hours of power reserve<\/strong>, it derives from that family of latest generation automatic calibers which we have gotten to know through <strong>Tissot<\/strong>, <strong>Mido<\/strong> and <strong>Hamilton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"PR Rado HyperChrome 1616 tre\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/ITA_PR_Rado_HyperChrome_1616_tre.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" title=\"Rado_HyperChrome_1616_tre\">For the real hardcore aficionados who only opt for <strong>ceramic<\/strong>\u2013<strong>made<\/strong> <strong>Rado<\/strong> watches, the manufacturer has created the <strong>Rado Hyperchrome 1616 Black<\/strong> that features a single-block case made of <strong>black ceramic<\/strong> and the case-back made of <strong>PVD<\/strong>\u2013<strong>treated<\/strong> <strong>titanium<\/strong>.
