This is the only possible explanation that you can give when you are presented with the <span style=\"color: null;\"><strong>Breguet Type XXI 3817<\/strong><\/span> timepiece that was released in <strong>Basel<\/strong> and you then compare it to the <strong>Breguet Type XXI 3813<\/strong> watch with its <strong>platinum<\/strong>\u2013<strong>made<\/strong> case that the manufacturer donated to <strong>Only Watch<\/strong> in <strong>2015<\/strong>. Except for the material used to craft the case, the two watches are virtually the same.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the Tradition collection\u00a0summarizes <strong>Abraham<\/strong>\u2018s skill to create the most important complications in the history of watch-making, one of the best modern iterations being, for instance, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/breguet-tourbillon-extra-plat-5367-complicated-watch-hands-on-horbiter\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Breguet Tourbillon Extra<\/strong>\u2013<strong>Plat<\/strong> <strong>5367<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the\u00a0<strong>Breguet Type XXI 3817<\/strong>\u00a0represents the brand\u2019s sporty side of horlogerie. In there is also that part of the manufacturer\u2019s history that is closely linked to <strong>Abraham<\/strong>\u2018s great-grandson <strong>Louis<\/strong> <strong>Charles<\/strong> and the development of aviation in a period of time from <strong>1920<\/strong> onwards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_sei\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_sei.jpg\" alt=\"Breguet Type XXI 3817 sei\">After the experience of the <strong>10Hz<\/strong>\u2013<strong>caliber<\/strong>, the idea to release again the <strong>3813<\/strong> clearly means that the manufacturer is trying to find the <strong>Breguet Type XXI<\/strong>\u2018s original place while equipping it with a <strong>slate<\/strong>\u2013<strong>colour<\/strong> dial and taking to the extreme the size of its <strong>vintage<\/strong>\u2013<strong>colour<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>oversized<\/strong> <strong>Arabic<\/strong> numberals\u00a0filled with glowing material. The two oversized indexes crafted in the shape of a quad appearing on the dial make their come-back at 3 o\u2019 clock and at 9 o\u2019clock and\u00a0the dial seems to be split in three different levels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>three<\/strong> <strong>counters<\/strong> are slightly recessed, starting from the right hand side is the <strong>day<\/strong>\/<strong>night<\/strong> <strong>indicator<\/strong> and the minutes ring on the inner rehaut that is raised too. This type of design is used to give a tri-dimensional shape to the dial, the minutes ring is connected to the dial through those two cream-colour, glowing indexes filled with <strong>SuperLuminova<\/strong> material, while the <strong>third<\/strong> index has a triangular shape and is located on the bi-directional rotating bezel positioned at 12 o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_sette\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_sette.jpg\" alt=\"Breguet Type XXI 3817 sette\">The chronograph\u00a0is somehow unusual in its shape; the position of the three registers doesn\u2019t correspond to the classic functions of a chronograph\u00a0since the <strong>totalizer<\/strong> of the <strong>chrono<\/strong> <strong>minutes<\/strong> is in a coaxial position if compared to the central seconds hand that is actually a <strong>Flyback<\/strong>\u2018s one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is an original solution that was probably used in the old-type chronographs and, at first sight, it seems as if <strong>Breguet<\/strong> had decided to craft a split-seconds chronograph\u00a0or that are aiming at crafting a new one in the future using this type of basis as their starting point. Moving the totalizer to the centre has actually allowed, as said, the insertion of the day\/night indicator at 3 o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_quattro\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_quattro.jpg\" alt=\"Breguet Type XXI 3817 quattro\">The <strong>Breguet Type XXI\u00a03817<\/strong> is hence a <strong>Flyback<\/strong> chronograph\u00a0or, as written in italics on the dial, it features a \u201c<em>retour en vol<\/em>\u201d function, a way to stress the fact that this timepiece has a pedigree and also to remind us that this brand\u2019s chronographs used to be part of the instrument panel of the aircraft\u2019s cockpits or were worn around the wrist of the soldiers of the <strong>French<\/strong> <strong>Air<\/strong> <strong>Force<\/strong>. The stainless steel-made case measures <strong>42mm<\/strong> and is completely grooved following the traditional rules of <strong>Breguet<\/strong> timepieces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_cinque\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Breguet_Type_XXI_3817_cinque.jpg\" alt=\"Breguet Type XXI 3817 cinque\">The on-view caliber is a first for this collection and it is actually a very nice feature if you consider the fact that we are dealing with a Swiss in-house built movement with <strong>inverted straight-line lever\u00a0escapement<\/strong> and <strong>silicon<\/strong> <strong>balance<\/strong> <strong>spring<\/strong>. For some strange reason, <strong>Breguet<\/strong> inserted a winding rotor that covers half of the caliber and, in a specific moment when brands try their best to bring out the style and skeletonize it, the movement is definitely less visible than you might expect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Breguet_Type_XXI_3817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/Breguet_Type_XXI_3817.jpg\" alt=\"Breguet Type XXI 3817\">If you really want to make sure whether this is a well-designed timepiece or not, the only thing that you can do is trying it on. The <strong>Breguet Type XXI 3817<\/strong> is the best answer to those who love historic collections, those people who consider a <strong>Type<\/strong> as a model of timepiece that is too sporty for this brand.
