If you were to ask me which two key points<\/em> of the 2016 SIHH<\/strong><\/span> fair I am going to remember for a long time, I would reply with two nouns; details<\/em> and tradition<\/em>. Those two nouns, when applied to IWC<\/strong><\/span>, mean a revamping of the Pilot\u2019s<\/strong> collection, especially the Big Pilot\u2019s Watch<\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u00a0and the launch of the modern edition of the 52 T.S.C.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 55mm wide Limited Edition Heritage Watch is the modern T.S.C.<\/h2>\n

In the past, IWC<\/strong> have accustomed us with the revamping of an entire collection on a yearly basis but the IWC Big Pilot\u2019s Heritage Watch<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>was something that was more than a surprise, it was some sort of a\u00a0\u201dgame-changer<\/em>\u201d to mark the brand\u2019s historical leadership in the sector of the so-called Observation\u00a0Watches<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A leadership we witnessed during our recent tour of the new manufacture<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, especially during the second day <\/strong>and\u00a0two years ago too, when IWC Schaffhausen<\/strong> displayed some of their historical Pilot\u2019s Watches<\/strong> inside the brand\u2019s boutique located in Piazza di Spagna<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Rome.<\/p>\n

\"iwc-big-pilots-heritage-watch-presentation-sihh\"As Christian Knoop<\/strong> (IWC Creative Director<\/strong>) confirmed during our interview two years ago, the logic that lies behind a simple and faithful re-editing process has been avoided\u00a0as it would have betrayed, at least from an aesthetic point of view, the innovation spirit that has always characterized the brand from Schaffhausen<\/strong> and that has dramatically increased in the last 5 years.<\/p>\n

\"christian-knoop-and-gaetano-cimmino\"Besides, from a simple communication point of view, a simple re-launch would have had a counter-effect on the new 52 T.S.C.<\/strong>\u2018s impact since many brands, in the last 10 years, have made that type of aesthetics theirs by imitating the original one, size included.<\/p>\n

The history behind the \u201cDie Gr\u00f6\u00dfe\u00a0Fliegeruhr\u201d\u00a0by IWC Schaffhausen.<\/h2>\n

The history that takes us to the crafting of the IWC Big Pilot\u2019s Heritage Watch<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0started before 1940<\/strong>; from a simple mechanical point of view, the 52 T.S.C.<\/strong> is the heir of the movements series called \u201cIWC Calibre<\/em>\u201d that were produced in 1888<\/strong> and were based on the 1886<\/strong> \u201cElgin III<\/em>\u201d calibers.<\/p>\n

Back in those days, this type of timepieces weren\u2019t aviator\u2019s watches yet and the 52 caliber<\/strong>, which derives from the \u201cCalibre<\/em>\u201d, was inserted for the last time within the case of 1,200 Big Pilot\u2019s Watches<\/strong> and a desk clock requested by the British Royal Navy<\/strong> that year and that, in its latest version, featured central seconds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Two Limited Edition timepieces: a 55mm wide watch with no date and a 48mm wide one with a date window placed at six o\u2019clock<\/h2>\n

IWC<\/strong> presented two years ago a collector\u2019s piece version measuring 55mm<\/strong>\u00a0(ref. 5104<\/strong>) and produced in just\u00a0100<\/strong> pieces<\/strong>\u00a0and also a second<\/strong> version<\/strong> that was produced in 1,000 pieces<\/strong> and whose case measures 48mm <\/strong>(ref. 5103<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

The first version<\/strong> is clearly a collector\u2019s piece<\/strong> and it is mainly geared towards those who are fond of the military style, it is definitely not something that you would wear on a daily basis and its main purpose is to become the collection\u2019s flagship thus improving the brand\u2019s and collection\u2019s awareness even further. It is already a collector\u2019s piece. How do you distinguish between the 55mm<\/strong>\u2013version<\/strong> and the 48-mm version<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

\"iwc-big-pilots-heritage-watch-48-7\"Leaving aside the difference existing between the in-house-built calibers<\/strong> used (they belong to the 98000 family<\/strong> in the first case and to the 52000 family<\/strong> in the second case) it is not a very complicated task indeed: take a look at the distance between the indexes<\/strong> located at 5 o\u2019clock<\/strong> and at 7 o\u2019clock<\/strong> and also at the\u00a0index located at 6 o\u2019clock<\/strong> and the small<\/strong> seconds<\/strong> counter<\/strong> that replaced the central counter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the 48mm-version<\/strong> timepiece the two Arabic numberals<\/strong>\u00a0are almost touching the small seconds scale. Or, elsewhere, you will notice the 55mm<\/strong> wide version has no date window at all.<\/p>\n

\"iwc-big-pilots-watch-5002\"The IWC Big Pilot\u2019s Heritage Watch<\/strong>\u00a0was the first Pilot\u2019s<\/strong> timepiece to be unveiled at the SIHH 2016<\/strong> and it has therefore unveiled some technical solutions that have been adopted on the entire collection too; the glowing triangle<\/strong> has gone back to its previous location \u2013 underneath the glowing baton index located at 12 o\u2019clock \u2013 while the number 9<\/strong>\u00a0made its comeback on the dial, despite the fact that the font of those numbers dramatically evolved if compared to the year 2002<\/strong>\u2018s.<\/p>\n

\"iwc-big-pilots-heritage-watch-48-8\"IWC<\/strong> went back to the dial of the first 2002 Big Pilot\u2019s Watch <\/strong>(ref. 5002<\/strong>), one of the most sought-after and more valuable Big Pilot\u2019s<\/strong> timepieces still for sale. Despite the fact that these specific timepieces started their\u00a0production just 14 years ago and were not part of a limited series, they are still selling for lots on money in the market of second-hand watches.<\/p>\n

The 59000 caliber family<\/h2>\n

The IWC Big Pilot\u2019s Heritage Watch 48<\/strong>, we reviewed\u00a0in this article, is equipped with a manual in-house-built 59215<\/strong> caliber<\/strong> that guarantees up to 8 days of power reserve<\/strong>. The timepiece is 48mm<\/strong> large<\/strong> and 14.5mm<\/strong> thick but it is extremely light because the case is made of titanium<\/strong> and it only weighs 120 grams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"iwc-big-pilots-heritage-watch-48-1\"Focusing on the details, we can see that IWC<\/strong>\u00a0improved something that, in my personal opinion, should have been improved on the entire previous Pilot\u2019s collection<\/strong>; the strap.<\/p>\n

\"iwc-big-pilots-heritage-watch-48-6\"<\/strong>The manufacturer opted for a soft brown calf leather strap<\/strong> with contrasting<\/strong> ecru<\/strong> stitching<\/strong> that had previously been used in the 2002<\/strong> series. In the case of the Heritage<\/strong> timepiece, it is not a traditional strap but rather a bracelet-strap<\/strong> that resembles the original aviator\u2019s watches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The only con is that the strap is a bit too long\u00a0even when wrapped around an important wrist like mine and buckled up, the end of the strap tends to almost touch the lower edge of the case.<\/p>\n

Eight days of power reserve, visible through the case\u00a0back<\/h2>\n

IWC<\/strong>\u00a0decided not to abandon the power reserve\u2019s viewing feature and moved it to the back case (but only on the 48mm<\/strong>-version), a practical solution that the manufacturer had to match with the characteristic magnetoresistance that is typical of all Pilot\u2019s<\/strong> watches.\u00a0The retail price of the IWC Big Pilot\u2019s Heritage Watch 48<\/strong> is today \u20ac15,200<\/strong>.\u00a0It is an important price for what you can consider as the ultimate aviator\u2019s watch with a pedigree and superb technical features and finishing.<\/p>\n

\"iwc-big-pilots-heritage-watch-48-2\"The manufacturer crafted just\u00a01,000 pieces<\/strong> of this particular timepiece and that gives a unique value to a watch that can already boast a great manual in-house-built caliber<\/strong> with a Breguet balance-spring<\/strong>, that guarantees up to 8 days of power reserve<\/strong>. We need to praise IWC<\/strong> for having the courage to be the first Haute-Horlogerie brand to have listened to the voice of its collectors and the requests of watch connoisseurs.<\/p>\n

Thanks to their new ideas, IWC<\/strong> gave us additional choices to source from when it comes to military watches from the 30s and 40s and they showed once again their leadership in the sector of historical aviator\u2019s watches after triumphing in the sector of modern pilot\u2019s watches too.<\/p>\n
