Raffaella, a friend of mine and a partner in the Horbiter project, she owns one and together we took it to the<strong> IWC Boutique<\/strong> in Piazza di Spagna for a general overhaul. She cherishes it jealously, as it became a collector\u2019s piece, the first true <strong>Ingenieur<\/strong>, designed by <strong>Gerald Genta<\/strong>. My familiarity with this collection has grown over the years, at the same time as <strong>IWC<\/strong> has revolutionized it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_2.JPG\" alt=\"\">The <strong>Ingenieur<\/strong> has never been among my favourite <strong>IWC<\/strong> to be honest (with some exceptions, such as the <strong>Big Ingenieur<\/strong>). I\u2019ve always instinctively associated the brand to the <strong>Pilot<\/strong> or the <strong>Portugieser<\/strong> collections. When <strong>IWC<\/strong>, however, releases a new super complicated timepiece, I\u2019m talking about a perpetual calendar in particular, my interest grows and the concept of \u00a0\u201ccollection\u201d loses some of its meaning, in my opinion. Each collection from the brand (except the <strong>Portofino<\/strong>) features a perpetual calendar; in the case of the <strong>Ingenieur<\/strong>, it is the <strong>IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date Month<\/strong>. It clearly means that this is the brand\u2019s mainstream; I do believe <strong>IWC<\/strong> to be the only brand today to offer such a wide line-up of watches with this complication: sporty, classic, even a diver\u2019s watch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_5.JPG\" alt=\"\"><strong>IWC<\/strong> super-complicated watches are available at the brand\u2019s retailers, and the one in Piazza di Spagna especially deserves a visit if you appreciate special editions; here you may find for example the <strong>Pilot Top Gun Boutique Edition<\/strong> collection and the <strong>Pilot Collector\u2019s Forum<\/strong>. The very last <strong>Ingenieur<\/strong> collection draws inspiration from the partnership with the F1 reigning Champion Team, the <span style=\"color: null;\"><strong>AMG Mercedes<\/strong><\/span>, and the <strong>IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date Month<\/strong> is the sportiest complicated watch on offer at <strong>IWC<\/strong> right now. Its case is <strong>46mm<\/strong> wide and is made of <strong>titanium aluminide<\/strong>, a compound of aluminum and titanium that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>General Electric<\/strong><\/span><\/a> adopts, for instance, in making the blades that equip the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boeing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Boeing<\/span><\/a> 787<\/strong>\u2018s turbine engines; it offers lightness and a superior resistance to oxidation and corrosion at high temperatures (600\u00b0C). It represent an essential addition, as the difference with any other titanium alloy used in watchmaking is huge and difficult to appreciate by simply looking at the watch itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_3.JPG\" alt=\"\">The bezel is joint to the case via <strong>five zirconium oxide screws<\/strong> (i.e. Ceramics). Technically commendable, although I would have gone for a \u201cneater\u201d esthetical solution, such as in the <strong>Constant Force Tourbillon<\/strong>, where the bezel\u2019s width has been reduced in favour of the dial width, and there are no visible screws. It is perhaps a technical solution needed to join a four-part case, as you can see via the side view, from where you can also see that the <strong>chrono pushers<\/strong> are made of <strong>zirconium-oxide<\/strong> like the crown and its protectors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_4.JPG\" alt=\"\">The dial has three digital counters, which would appeal to a motoring fan as well as to those who are passionate about numerical series. Date and month digital visualization, each of them operated via two separated discs covered by a smoked glass, resembles the kind of engine equipped with a cascade gearing power supply, while the white lines around them remind me of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Formula 1<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u2018s steering wheel from some years ago (below is a 2000 Ferrari F1\u2019s steering wheel replica).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"f_2000_ferrari_steering_wheel_michael_schumacher\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/f_2000_ferrari_steering_wheel_michael_schumacher.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the main esthetical and technical difference from an <strong>IWC Pilot Top Gun Perpetual Calendar <\/strong>(and a <strong>Spitfire Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month<\/strong> too?) The best time to find out might be the 31<sup>st<\/sup> of December at midnight: in that precise moment, all the discs rotate simultaneously (and are fully visible) updating <strong>day<\/strong>, <strong>month<\/strong> as well as the l<strong>eap year indication<\/strong>, placed in a counter at 6. A layout that, for a moment, would make you think you are wearing a watch with an un-destructured hours visualization, if it wasn\u2019t for the central hours and minutes hands, and a small counter at 12, for tracking chrono minutes and hours, of the <strong>Flyback<\/strong> chronograph.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_on_the_wrist\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_on_the_wrist.JPG\" alt=\"\">Once on the wrist, one should forget about a <strong>Pilot Perpetual Calendar<\/strong>\u2018s linear design (and the <strong>Spitfire<\/strong>\u2018s too): in that case it\u2019s all about a <strong>flat design<\/strong> and a <strong>uniform geometry<\/strong> (as with a <strong>Portugieser Perpetual Calendar<\/strong>). The <strong>IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date Month<\/strong> is the opposite: it features a <strong>multi-layer dial<\/strong>, where transparency is a given. If you would like to compare the two, it would be like comparing a <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">MV Agusta<\/span> F4<\/strong> with its little sister, the <strong>Brutale 800 Dragster<\/strong>, that boasts an aggressive design, with visible engine and frame.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/media\/uploads\/IWC_Ingenieur_Perpetual_Calendar_Digital_Date_Month_6.JPG\" alt=\"\">The case back is also transparent, and the in-house caliber <strong>89802<\/strong> has its rotor in the shape of a car\u2019s alloy wheel. Like it or not, the I<strong>WC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date Month<\/strong> is a technological marvel and is the only perpetual calendar aimed at those people who have at least two passions: <strong>cars<\/strong> and <strong>watches<\/strong>.
