{"id":25931,"date":"2021-03-18T16:42:05","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T16:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/the-tag-heuer-senna-special-edition-2015\/"},"modified":"2021-11-26T15:08:24","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T15:08:24","slug":"tag-heuer-senna-special-edition-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horbiter.com\/en\/tag-heuer-senna-special-edition-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2015 watch hands-on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was 20 when <strong>Ayrton Senna<\/strong> died, but I was lucky enough to witness his steady climb to the top of the <strong>Formula 1 <\/strong>racing charts that eventually crowned him the best driver of all time. <strong>Senna<\/strong>, as I wrote in a previous post already, has always been closely linked to two brands: <strong>Honda<\/strong> and <strong>TAG Heuer<\/strong>. With <strong>Honda<\/strong>, the F1 racer had an intense personal and professional relationship (<strong>Senna<\/strong> was deeply involved in the development of the <strong>Honda NSX<\/strong>, a joint venture between the Japanese car-maker and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mclaren.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>McLaren<\/strong><\/span><\/a> team), while for <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAG Heuer<\/strong><\/span>, which was one of <strong>McLaren<\/strong>\u2018s technical partners, <strong>Senna<\/strong> become a brand ambassador.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"TAG_Heuer_AyrtonSenna_ADVERT_1991\" src=\"\/media\/uploads\/TAG_Heuer_AyrtonSenna_ADVERT_1991.jpg\" alt=\"TAG Heuer Ayrton Senna pubblicita\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The tagline for the brand\u2019s advertising campaign, which appeared on every magazine of the time, was, <em>\u201cDon\u2019t crack under pressure.\u201d<\/em> Very soon this phrase became a powerful claim and many watches were created under this statement, the most famous of which was an analog-digital timepiece that <strong>Ayrton Senna<\/strong> was very fond of and used on a daily basis: the <strong>1991 TAG Heuer S\/EL<\/strong>. Today, <strong>Senna<\/strong>\u2018s personal watch is owned by <strong>Jo Ramirez<\/strong>, a former <strong>McLaren<\/strong>\u2018s technician and a very close friend of the deceased driver.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"Historic_TAG_Heuer_Ayrton_Senna_Chrono_1991_mod\" src=\"\/media\/uploads\/Historic_TAG_Heuer_Ayrton_Senna_Chrono_1991_mod.jpg\" alt=\"TAG Heuer Ayrton Senna Crono 1991\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>TAG Heuer<\/strong> has ideally recreated that former partnership by associating <strong>Senna<\/strong>\u2018s face to two of its collections: the <strong>Formula 1<\/strong> and, partially, the <strong>Carrera<\/strong>. Over the last years, there have been numerous limited edition watches created and named after the F1 champion (it is actually very difficult to list them all as they were mostly created for a very restricted group of aficionados.) Today, some of those collectors, own precious timepieces that have seen their collecting value grow exponentially. This year, <strong>TAG Heuer<\/strong> launched two new models and four new versions: one is the <strong>TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition<\/strong>, while the second one is the <strong>TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Senna Special Edition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"TAG_Heuer_Formula_1_Senna_Special_Edition\" src=\"\/media\/uploads\/TAG_Heuer_Formula_1_Senna_Special_Edition.JPG\" alt=\"TAG Heuer Formula 1 Ayrton Senna Special Edition\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In my opinion, both timepieces are highly sophisticated customizations of two TAG collections. The <strong>TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition<\/strong> is a <strong>43mm<\/strong> diameter <strong>Formula 1<\/strong> quartz chrono that comes in two versions: the first one features <strong>red accents<\/strong>, while the second is painted in <strong>green<\/strong> and <strong>yellow<\/strong> and reminds us of the Brazilian flag or, if you prefer, of <strong>Senna<\/strong>\u2018s racing helmet. On both models, the \u201c<strong>S<\/strong>\u201d red logo is printed on the dial and the wording \u201c<strong>Senna<\/strong>\u201d is engraved on the bezel, along with the tachy scale.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"TAG_Heuer_Formula_1_Senna_Special_Edition_evi\" src=\"\/media\/uploads\/TAG_Heuer_Formula_1_Senna_Special_Edition_evi_3L3mOg3.JPG\" alt=\"TAG Heuer Ayrton Senna Special Edition 1\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More interestingly, as well as more classy, is the <strong>TAG Heuer Carrera Caliber 16 Senna Special Edition<\/strong>: the right answer to those who have been waiting for years for a new release of the <strong>Link<\/strong> timepieces originally created for the F1 racer. This watch is essentially a <strong>Carrera<\/strong> item that has been embellished with a <strong>Link<\/strong> bracelet, exactly like the <strong>Formula 1<\/strong>, but while the <strong>Formula 1<\/strong> has a traditional folding clasp, the <strong>Carrera<\/strong> has the very same integrated deployment buckle of a <strong>Link<\/strong> bracelet. This new bracelet is called \u201cLegend\u201d on the <strong>Senna Special Edition<\/strong> timepieces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"TAG_Heuer_Carrera_Calibre_16_Chrono_Senna_CBB2010.BA0906_2015_red\" src=\"\/media\/uploads\/TAG_Heuer_Carrera_Calibre_16_Chrono_Senna_CBB2010.BA0906_2015_red.jpg\" alt=\"TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chrono Senna\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the four new watches, the <strong>Carrera Caliber 16<\/strong> is undoubtely the most appealing one: it is a beautiful <strong>44mm<\/strong> three counter chrono embellished by the \u201cLegend\u201d bracelet and made sporty by the thin \u201c<strong>Senna<\/strong>\u201d writing on the bezel, the \u201c<strong>S<\/strong>\u201d logo and the small red accents on the dial. This timepiece can be perfectly placed in between a classic and a sporty chrono because its dial is anthracite grey with a soleil motif: a typical dial that is used for both styles in watch making. The combination betwen style and balance, what English speakers call \u201cthe cool factor\u201d, is simply outstanding and, in my opinion, this is by far the best <strong>Senna Limited Edition TAG Heuer<\/strong> chrono ever made.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"TAG_Heuer_Carrera_Calibre_16_Chrono_Senna_tre\" src=\"\/media\/uploads\/TAG_Heuer_Carrera_Calibre_16_Chrono_Senna_tre.jpg\" alt=\"TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chrono Senna\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are looking for an exclusively sporty version of this timepiece, you should go for the Titanium version (covered in Titanium carbide.) The \u201c<strong>Senna<\/strong>\u201d writing is <strong>white<\/strong> and, in both versions, the brand\u2019s logo is placed at 12 hours on the bezel. The bracelet has been replaced by a rubber strap sporting a \u201c<em>Vintage Dunlop<\/em>\u201d motif and a folding buckle. A small note about the logo: on the new advertising campaign of the brand (pictured above) you might have noticed that the <strong>TAG Heuer<\/strong> logo has been redesigned, the \u201c<strong>TAG<\/strong>\u201d part has lost its classic arrow shape and it has been simplified.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 100%;\" title=\"TAG_Heuer_Carrera_Calibre_16_Chrono_Senna\" src=\"\/media\/uploads\/TAG_Heuer_Carrera_Calibre_16_Chrono_Senna.jpg\" alt=\"TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chrono Senna 2\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The timepieces pictured here are samples and they all feature the current logo but, most likely, once they will be for sale in shops, they will sport the new logo on their dial. To summarize: it is nice to see that <strong>TAG<\/strong> has revamped the <strong>Ayrton Senna limited edition watches<\/strong> because this niche market linking timepieces and cars counts many aficionados and it hasn\u2019t been affected by the economic crisis so far. Among those four watches the <strong>steel<\/strong> <strong>Carrera<\/strong> is definitely the best one and it could have been even better had it adopted the <strong>1887 movement<\/strong>, even if this had meant paying a higher price for it.
