Q<\/strong>: Federico, what does caliber 321<\/strong> mean in Omega\u2019s<\/strong> history?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A<\/strong>: The Omega<\/strong> calibre 321<\/strong> is the essence of the Omega Speedmaster<\/strong>. It beats inside one of the most appreciated and admired chronographs of the world. All the changes, or the revolutions, the mechanical movement has gone through over the years have come following its case and dial\u2019s change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many among you out there are truly aware of the early history of the Omega<\/strong> Speedmaster<\/strong>? I\u2019m going to mention\u00a0 just a few!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case, in stainless steel, was born in 1957, featuring a 39mm<\/strong> wide case and straight lugs, as reference ck2915<\/strong>: black dial and Swiss made lettering, \u201cbroad arrow<\/strong>\u201d hands (with no \u201cprofessional<\/strong>\u201d lettering), chrono pushers 4mm wide and Speedmaster<\/strong> lettering on the back.<\/p>\n\n\n

We are at the origins of a legend. In 1959<\/strong>, the Speedmaster<\/strong>\u2018s case widens to 40mm<\/strong>, its dial features dauphine hands and reference Omega CK2998<\/a><\/strong> is born, boasting a black bezel and a \u201c500\u201d tachy scale.<\/p>\n\n\n

In 1961<\/strong>, for just 4 months it is being produced with baton hands and anthracite dial as well, a rare and highly sought after version: it is the same Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321<\/strong> you may see in these photos, which is part of my personal collection.<\/p>\n\n\n

Q<\/strong>: what about from 1960<\/strong> and beyond?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A<\/strong>: From 1962 to 1965<\/strong> hands are baton shaped, the lettering \u201cT Swiss Made T<\/em>\u201d (Tritium) appears on the dial and its pushers are now 5mm<\/strong> wide. As of late 1965<\/strong> the Omega Speedmaster<\/strong> lugs assume the heli design we\u2019ve all become accustomed to today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this moment some rumors about Nasa<\/strong> testing some Speedmasters<\/strong> reach Omega<\/strong>\u2018s ears: it is perhaps by chance that the lettering \u201cProfessional<\/strong>\u201d appears on the dial. The chrono pushers are now 6mm<\/strong> wide and the case moves from 40<\/strong> to 42mm<\/strong> in diameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Year 1969<\/strong> marks the greatest modification: the Omega Speedmaster<\/strong> will adopt the caliber 861<\/strong>, that will then be upgraded to caliber 1861<\/strong>, replacing definitely the caliber 321<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Q<\/strong>: Which Omega Speedmaster<\/strong> was used during the first moon landing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A<\/strong>: Good question; Omega<\/strong> had already made a lot of versions just before that day, even if we\u2019re in 1969, when caliber 861<\/strong> had entered large scale production already, the first watch to land on the moon was equipped with a caliber 321<\/strong> and wrapped around Buzz Aldrin<\/strong>\u2018s wrist, as Neil Armstrong<\/strong> had left his own Speedmaster<\/strong> on the spaceship.<\/p>\n\n\n

Few people know that mission Apollo 13<\/strong>, in the words of astronauts, was saved thanks to this Omega<\/strong> Speedmaster<\/strong> that had replaced on-board instrumentation failure and helped them in setting precisely the engine turn on timing while trying to get back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Speedmaster was then awarded the \u201cSnoopy Award<\/em>\u201d the highest prize given by Nasa<\/strong>\u2018s astronauts.\u00a0In 2003<\/strong> Omega<\/strong> commemorated this achievement by launching the Omega Speedmaster Snoopy Limited Edition<\/strong>, one of the most sought after \u201cSpeedys<\/em>\u201d by collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n

Q<\/strong>: What has made this movement so special and highly performing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A<\/strong>: Caliber 321<\/strong> is the result of a project by Albert Piguet<\/strong>\u00a0and Jaques Reymond<\/strong>, in a cooperation between Omega<\/strong> and Lemania<\/strong> that gave life to a movement coded as 27CHROC12<\/strong> (27<\/strong> as its diameter, chro<\/strong>=chronograph, c12<\/strong>=12 hour chrono counter). This movement will be named as Lemania<\/strong> \u201ccaliber 2310<\/strong>\u201d or \u201ccaliber 321<\/strong>\u201d by Omega<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

It is a refined caliber: manual wind with the balance wheel oscillating at 2.5Hz<\/strong>, 17 jewels<\/strong>, just 27mm<\/strong> wide and 6,74mm<\/strong> thick, Incabloc<\/strong> system with a 44 hour<\/strong> power reserve and, icing on the cake, a column wheel mechanism<\/strong> to operate the chronograph.<\/p>\n\n\n

It means that the chrono is operated by a wheel in the shape of multiple columns. To make a long story short it\u2019s all about fingers that fall into and out of the spaces between the teeth of the wheel and the biggest difference being in the labor-intensive realization process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A column wheel<\/strong> is made out of a small steel monobloc<\/strong> that is finely reworked at a CNC machinery, to give it a sort of crenellated tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Omega-Calibre-321\"The end result is a smoother<\/strong> and more precise<\/strong> chrono activation. Since its production process is quite expensive this technical solution is adopted just on high end watches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not by chance Omega<\/strong> has re-introduced this device on its high-end 9300 caliber<\/strong> that equips the two-counter Omega Speemaster Co-Axial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it is why an Omega<\/strong> Speedmaster Caliber 321<\/strong> is among the most sought after Speedmaster<\/strong> by enthusiasts and connoiseurs who are willing to pay\u00a0 record hammer prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
