\u201cAll must change in order for things to stay the same.\u201d<\/em> <\/span>The phrase from the Gattopardo<\/i>, the famous novel written by Tomasi di Lampedusa, is also perfectly suited to the world of luxury watches, although in this case there is no political implication to be attributed to the enduring challenge that has always existed between two of the most famous maisons \u2013 Patek Philippe<\/strong> and Rolex<\/strong> \u2013 ever since the beginning of International watch auctions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

The Antiquorum Auction held on December 11, titled \u201cImportant Modern and Vintage Timepieces<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 brought in five million dollars\u2026 and of this amount, unless our math is completely off kilter, about half was earned by 8 watches out of a total of 343 \u2013 5 Patek Philippe<\/strong> and 3 Rolex<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

These are the two names that always stand out in all auctions and what was most obvious in this most recent as in previous Antiquorum auctions is the fact that a Patek<\/strong> Philippe<\/strong> (complicated, especially the perpetual calendar) is constantly at the top of the list for all great collectors who are willing to pay increasingly higher prices.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

If it\u2019s true that at one time this applied only to vintage models, now more than ever we see that it also applies to modern models, justified by the exclusivity of the <\/span>Patek Philippe<\/strong> collection, few in number but of great manufacture.<\/span><\/p>\n

And though there are other maisons with productions that are just as exclusive, none are more \u201cdesirable\u201d than a <\/span>Patek Philippe<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And if it\u2019s not a <\/span>Patek Philippe<\/strong> that incites the desire of a great collector, then it\u2019s <\/span>Rolex<\/strong>, with the ever enduring <\/span>Daytona Paul Newman<\/em>, an allure that never goes out of style, a watch of such extraordinary expressive power and technical merit that we often wonder whether <\/span>Rolex<\/strong> may not perhaps re-propose it, even in a highly limited number.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s really no coincidence that it is only (or almost) these two names that are always in the limelight; <\/span>Patek Philippe<\/strong> and <\/span>Rolex<\/strong> are two complementary maisons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Patek Philippe<\/strong> is the leader in pluri-complicated watches (gold or platinum) and <\/span>Rolex<\/strong> has no competitor in the field of sports chronographs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The amount of 183,750 dollars paid for reference number 6263, in steel (lot 152), at this Antiquorum\u2019s auction, is simply extraordinary:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

<\/span><\/span>Moving over to some more reasonable prices, it\u2019s impressive to see the amount reached by reference 7042 by Longines<\/strong>, lot 124, sold for the considerable amount of $13,750:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Something that will no doubt please anyone who has carefully preserved the precursor of the Diver reference in today\u2019s collection.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this should not surprise anyone who is familiar with the history of Longines<\/strong> and the great value, including historical, of several milestones of this maison, especially the original Lindbergh Hour Angle<\/em> and the single push-button chrono caliber 13.33Z<\/em> dating to 1913!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
