Face to Face – The TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty Nine

This is the dual face of the maison: avant-garde technology and legacy, the TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty Nine. A dream come true, to wear on your wrist both the digital and the analogic, electronic and mechanical. Both with the same dignity. All you have to do is choose which one to wear. And TAG Heuer has succeeded in uniting two schools of thought, two cultures of haute horlogerie, Europe and the Orient. Even though TAG Heuer is the European leader in top quality digital chronometry. As we wrote in one of the first photos of our Instagram profile “It's Daft Punk time at Horbiter today” and we were the first to do so; something the Daft Punk immediately recognized and liked:

Because if you look at it from the digital side this seems to be the transposition to the wrist of Thomas Bangalter’s helmet while working at the console: the almost infinite digital functions of the TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty Nine mirroring the infinite sampling frames of the most brilliant artistic duo that robot music has ever known:

Then, when you rotate it 180 degrees, you have the icon of the seventies, reassuring, elegant with its manual wind movement, the small seconds at 6 o’clock, the indexes, a homage to classical watchmaking:

In both versions, you have the lettering “Sixty-Nine” indicating the year the most famous square watch in the world was launched. The TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty Nine was first presented as a concept in 2003, and then went on to win the award for Best Design at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie in Geneva in 2004. In production, precisely equivalent to the Concept version, the TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty-Nine has a double core, mechanical, with its caliber 2, manual wind, as well as a technological one, digital screen, caliber HR03 with functions such as a chronometer at 1/1000 per second, ten best laps and “black panel” so very much like a SAAB 9-3 Turbo. Anyone who has one, or has had one, will understand. Every time I wear it I am inevitably stopped by someone who says: “Wow! What watch is that?” and I, with a bit of hedonism combined with a certain sense of satisfaction am happy to tell its story, from its concept to the present:

And when I rotate the case from digital to analogic and vice versa, according to the occasion, I wish I could describe the expression on their faces. Furthermore, since the question has been asked on various occasions and at different times through the years, I take it as proof that this TAG Heuer watch is a part of the brand legacy and is an object of contemporary design but also that it is timeless. It is, in our opinion, a concept that should continue to be developed. True, it is large and heavy and this may at times bother you even if, like me, you have a large wrist, but you know something? Every time I open my watch case and put it on I forget about how large it is because it’s as attractive and as exciting as it was the very first time I put it on and it always reminds me of a gentle melody of “Random Access Memories”. Thomas admit it… you also have a TAG Heuer Monaco Sixty Nine in your collection…or you’re thinking about it after seeing it on our Instagram profile.

How do i fix mine. It stopped working and the manual wind isnt responding.either. Cant let go of the watch. What do i do

Hi Nkem I guess it has stopped first the quartz movement, at least it is what I get by reading your comment. If the battery is over and you do not replace it immediately, it might affect the mechanical movement. Suggest you to bring it to your nearest TAG Heuer Service Center. Ciao, Gaetano
